The forthcoming Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will discard the proprietary AMD-driven fglrx (catalyst-driven), and developers will encourage the use of open-source alternatives to radeon and amdgpu. AMD has been using open-source and closed-source drivers on the Linux platform for the past two years. amdgpu will be used together as a core component by open-source and closed-source drivers. Canonical/Ubuntu developers said that when AMD users upgrade from the old version to 16.04, The fglrx driver and xorg. conf will be removed. AMD users can use open-source drivers or manually download the fglrx driver from the AMD website. The open-source driver does not catch up with the closed-source driver. It only supports OpenGL 4.1, while the closed-source driver supports OpenGL 4.5. The open-source driver does not support multiple CrossFire graphics cards.
