I encountered such a situation that Ubuntu7.10 was installed on an independent hard disk, but xp was already installed on a hard disk, xp, as the main disk, then put the hard disk where xp is located on another machine, so Ubuntu cannot be started. At this time, the image box of the selected system was not displayed, prompting bootfailure directly. I learned on the Internet that grub needs to be repaired. I still failed step by step according to the provided method. Finally, although I saw the image box selected by the system, xp still exists, but I reported invalid results when I went in.

Later, the hard disk where xp is located is stored on another machine, so Ubuntu cannot be started. At this time, the image box of the system selected was not displayed, prompting boot failure directly.

Later, I checked the partition information and found that the disk where Ubuntu is located is also bootable. The Boot information should not be broken, and my grub is not broken, because the fix is still the previous system selection menu. If there is a problem with the Startup Device of the menu, check/boot/grub/menu. lst, I found the problem. The Ubuntu hard disk is still the original number hd1, And I have removed the original master disk. At this time, Ubuntu should be the first hard disk hd0. Replace all with hd0 and delete the xp startup options. After the restart, everything works normally.
Each menu contains a root disk and partition.
Root (hdX, X)
HdX and X indicate the number of hard disks. The value starts from 0.
The following X indicates the partition number. We can see the number of the partition through sudo fdisk-l. The number is calculated from 1, and then the Partition Number is added after 1.
