After reading too many tutorials, I finally made up my mind to upgrade Ubuntu7.04 to 7.10. It was very fast to download it from Tsinghua source, but it took a long time to install it. It took nearly one hour. The new ubuntu version is named gutsy, And the File Manager is changed from the original Konqueror to a more useful Dolphin. However, the desktop is still unchanged. I have heard of vista's 3D desktop before, but the hardware requirements are high, so my machine can't stand it. However, the hardware requirements for the Ubuntu 7.10 3D desktop are much lower than those for vista. My machine memory is 512 M and the nvidia GeForce4 graphics card, but the Ubuntu 7.10 3D desktop is still quite smooth, there is no sense of a card at all. However, the installation and configuration of the 3D desktop are really difficult. It took two days to complete the configuration. Now it is quite stable. The following shows my results.
Here, we use ubuntu 7.10's 3D desktop software Compiz Fusion, which can be downloaded directly from the gutsy source. My ubuntu Desktop Environment is kde. The command for installing Compiz Fusion is as follows:
Sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-kde compiz-fusion -*
After compiz is installed, install the Theme Management Software emerald:
Sudo apt-get install emerald
