On July 6, October 23, the candidate version of Ubuntu 8.10 was released at Beijing time. Some new features were discovered through the preliminary experience of the Ubuntu lab. Where does Ubuntu 8.10 bring us? (Note: the official release date of Ubuntu 8.10 is January 1, October 30 .)

Recently, Microsoft's "black screen" event has become "full of wind and rain. The key to the "black screen" event is whether or not to implement the so-called "genuine verification "? Why do we need to deliver "Verification notifications "? What information does the verification tool extract from the user's computer? Why? Let's start with Ubuntu 8.10.

According to a recent study published by the Linux Foundation, there are a total of 6,399,191 lines of source code in the operating system Linux (kernel), of which 51.6% are hardware drivers and 19.7% are architecture programs, file Systems account for 8.5%, network accounts for 5.9%, sound 5.6%, including (Include) accounts for 5.0%, system core accounts for 1.2%, memory management accounts for 0.6%, cryptography accounts for 0.5%, and security accounts for 0.4%, other accounts for 1.1%. It is worth noting that drivers accounted for more than half of the total, while the core of the system in charge of process scheduling accounted for only 1.2%, and a decade ago, linux drivers, file systems, and system cores each account for 1/3. The current situation is much different from the past. In a word, the main part of modern operating systems is hardware drives. From this we can imagine that Microsoft XP is no exception.

How can I verify that a commercial operating system is bound to a computer with a genuine license? Obviously, you must start with the driver. When the system is installed, "Activate" it, that is, to notify the "Activate server" about the hardware configuration of the currently installed computer, and record it (corresponding to its product ID ), for example: Computer brand and model, serial number of the hard disk and motherboard, region and language settings, BIOS name, revision number and revision date, volume serial number, Nic, sound card, and so on (13 items in total ). After the system has been running for a period of time, the hardware situation has changed, or, for some reason, the system is randomly spread (others, other places), you need to verify it again. If an exception is found (compared with the activation server), the system notifies the user of "error" (Verification Failed) and the system has not been "authorized by genuine version ", "black screen" to show a reminder (whether to say it in good faith), marking the permanent visual brand "non-genuine authorization ". This is the traditional approach of commercial software, which is beyond review.

In the new version of Ubuntu 8.10, a USB Live application package named "Live USB Disk Creator" (self-starting USB flash drive generator) is added and placed in the Secondary Section of the "System" Column (Ubuntu lab told me ), you only need to insert a USB flash drive into the USB port and press the key several times. This shows that Ubuntu is not afraid (don't mind) of being embedded into a USB flash drive, so that users can take around the world with them (Mark Shuttleworth said ). To this end, Ubuntu 8.10 has added a new feature, that is, supporting 3G communication protocol, allowing users to take a Ubuntu computer when traveling by plane, EMU train, ship and private car, or take a small self-starting USB flash drive, find a diskless Internet cafe at the destination or somewhere, and plug it in and use it. Whining!

As you know, computer hardware does not need to be bound to a specific software (such as a Windows system). No matter what operating system it is, you just need to be able to automatically identify the hardware configuration. At this point, Ubuntu is better than XP and does not require an ID card (verification). It can be freely carried around.

(Note: Some people say that the USB flash drive is too slow to be used as a system boot disk! Because it does not conform to the actual situation, it is too difficult .)
