UbuntuServer11.04 install GNOME3

The hardware: ThinkPadX61, and UbuntuServer11.04 are used to install a USB flash drive.

The question is:

Hardware: ThinkPad X61 A, Ubuntu Server 11.04 installation U disk A (production method see http://www.linuxidc.com/Linux/2010-10/29207.htm)

Internet access: ADSL (Wireless, wired)

Operation: a pseudo-Programmer

1. Insert a USB flash drive, restart the notebook, and press F12 .... (For X61)

2. Go to the boot Options page, select USB boot, and then select install Ubuntu Server.

By default, you have mastered the general installation process. Do not follow the steps. Just a few points of attention.

A) I chose English for installation and system language because of Chinese support.

B) when selecting hard disk partitions, pay attention to selecting the boot attribute of the partitions installed by the system (it can be automatically started from this partition if the primary partition is not selected)

C) when installing the system, XP in my book has been abandoned for me, so there is no other system. You can choose GRUB to automatically generate it. Pay attention to it when there are other systems.

3. After the Ubuntu Server is installed, the Internet access is done first. The Wired condition is very simple. You can use pppoeconf to configure dial-up. Wireless connection requires complexity. Here I first download wicd-curses from a wired connection to configure the wireless Nic, connect to the wireless cat, and then configure it with pppoeconf.

4. After accessing the internet, we strongly recommend that you change the update source (change/etc/apt/sources. list ). The update may not be in place. There are not many 11.04 update sources on the Internet. In fact, almost all the updated names of 10.04 can be used to update 11.04. I didn't hear that the server only supports 10.04 and will not be updated. 11.04 is natty. Don't make a mistake.

5. Update the source file first.

Sudo apt-get update

Sudo apt-get upgrade

6. Install GNOME3

Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gnome3-team/gnome3

Sudo apt-get update

Sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

The add-apt-repository may not be installed. you can install python-software-properties. (It turns out to be a script ..)

Later, I continued to install gnome-core xserver-xorg-core. I'm not sure if I have to install gnome-core...

Finally, install a login program. You can choose from both the following options.

Then restart and you will be able to see the logon page .. I hope I didn't miss anything. If I couldn't see the login interface through the above process, please leave a message and let me know if there is anything missing...

On the logon page, select GNOME logon .. Then.

Of course, this is an error. This mistake has made many people spend a lot of time.

Cocould not update. ICEauthority...

Baidu .. It was found that N people encountered this problem when N was too many... The solution is nothing more --..

A few simple examples: directly changing the permissions of chown .. This is where the problem is found .. Unfortunately, a few steps are missing.

Install LXDE. I used this method to install LXDE when I upgraded 10.04 in 11.04 and installed GNOME3. Then I logged on to LXDE once to solve the permission problem, but it was unstable, there are some other problems in the future. Besides, this solution is a bit confusing, and it also becomes invalid in this case.

In fact, the biggest characteristic of software is not logic... There is a cause and effect in everything .. Right.

The problem is obviously caused by permission issues.

View the. ICEauthority permission. The owner has the rw permission and the file owner is the user. Why are there permissions ..

Unless. The ID at run time is not the user ID .. What is his ID ..

Now return to the. ICEauthority permission modification, sudo su. Super User. I don't believe I can't change your permissions ..

Still failed --....

Suddenly, there is a property in the file ..

Lsattr. ICEauthority

Haha. I found it .. Has an I attribute (ignore ?)

Sudo chattr-I. ICEauthority

After removing the I attribute, you can change the File Permission.

Sudo chmod a + rw. ICEauthority

Finally, the modification is complete... After restarting, you can finally enter GNOME3... And it is a fairly clean GNOME3... No software ..

Next, let's install the software on your own. Haha.

By the way, most of the solutions are found on GOOGLE. If the above steps are not available, try the following and I have done the following steps, however, I think it should be fine if this is not modified.

Error message: 'Could not update file ICEauthority'

To overcome this problem, go into recovery mode by pressing "Esc" when booting and select "recovery mode" in the GRUB menu.

Select "Drop to root shell prompt" then type the following commands one by one in the current shell:

Replace "username" with your user name in Ubuntu. restart and pray that the problem can be resolved.
