This article will conduct boot and functional performance comparison tests on the recently released Fedora 16 and Ubuntu 11.10.

First, we need to know that the differences between the two system platforms bring a lot of fun. Based on the Linux 3.1 kernel, Fedora 16 is equipped with the GNOME 3.2.1 desktop environment, including the GNOME Shell. Fedora 16 is further integrated with init system services.

At the same time, Ubuntu 11.10, released last month, is equipped with some GNOME 3.0 software packages in the Canonical Unity desktop environment based on the Linux 3.0 kernel. Both Fedora 16 and Ubuntu 11.10 have different characteristics. For example, if both of them use the GCC 4.6 compiler, the EXT4 file system is used by default.

In terms of battery and energy consumption testing, we use Lenovo ThinkPad T61, Asus Eee PC, and Lenovo ThinkPad W510, which are popular in the market.

The system startup speed is still using the familiar Bootchart tool, and both systems are installed in 64-bit versions. During system startup, all are set to the automatic logon mode, select all other settings as default. More importantly, each system restarts three times before the startup data is recorded.

The first test using Bootchart is the Asus Eee PC 1301N platform. The netbook is equipped with an Intel Atom 330 dual-core x86-64 processor, Nvidia GeForce 9400 M graphics card, 2 GB memory and a 250 GB, 5400 RPM Hitachi SATA hard drive.

According to the Bootchart test, the startup time of the Fedora system is 32.72 seconds, while that of Ubuntu 11.10 is 32.40 seconds, which is a little faster.
