Ubuntu11.10 or 12.04 install the update management indicator by running the following command:
Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: nilarimogard/webupd8
Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get install indicator-updatemanager
By default, the update management indicator icon is displayed only when an update is available. Run the following command for the first time:
Update_indicator -- with-preferences
