5G (the fifth generation of mobile communication technology) has entered the media and the public's eyes when the mainland has not yet achieved 4G (fourth generation mobile communication technology) commercial. Samsung Electronics has announced that it has achieved a key breakthrough in 5G technology and is expected to achieve 10Gbps transmission rates in the future, and plans to implement 5G commercial in 2020.

But what exactly is 5g?5g going to bring to society as a whole? Samsung did not give the answer. However, in the world's largest telecommunications equipment business Ericsson, 5G Technology will be able to bring human society into the network society, so that people and people, things and things, people and things communication.

In the 5G era, wireless communications will probably not appear similar to the 3G era TD-SCDMA and WCDMA, CDMA2000, wimax;4g era of LTE and LTE-FDD of the standard dispute, the global 5G technology will be expected to share a standard.

What's 5 g?

When Samsung announced its 5G technology breakthrough, it was widely believed that the so-called 5G, the transmission rate can reach 10Gbps of mobile communications technology, including the famous U.S. "Times" magazine.

"Time" magazine after Samsung announced the breakthrough in 5G technology, that is, published articles to see the decline of 5G technology. "Time," said 5G technology only to improve the transmission rate of wireless communications, but did not solve the future mobile internet traffic storm problems, network congestion and other old problems in the 5G era still can not be resolved.

"In fact, 5G and 4G, 3G, 2G different, 5G is not a single wireless access technology, is not a few new wireless access technology, but a variety of new wireless access technology and the existing wireless access technology (4G after the evolution of technology) integration of the solution collectively." In a way, 5 G is a truly converged network. "Ericsson researcher, EU Metis 5G Project overall director Afif Osseriran yesterday in the Phoenix Technology interview said.

Afif Osseriran said 5G's key goal is to build a network society, which means that 5G in addition to meet the ultra-high speed transmission needs, but also to meet the ultra-high capacity, ultra-high reliability, anytime, anywhere accessibility requirements, to solve the Times magazine, "Traffic Storm" and many other issues.

The EU forecasts that core services, such as electronic banking, e-learning and electronic medicine, will continue to be popular and more mobile. The development of the network society will bring the proliferation of mobile and wireless traffic. This means that by 2020, data traffic will increase by 1000 times times than in 2010. In addition, hybrid communication between people drives traffic growth, and it becomes extremely important to efficiently, easily and securely access and share information. The advent of the Internet of things and other new innovative applications will spawn tens of billions of of interconnected devices, creating unprecedented diversity requirements and applications related to wireless connectivity.

As a result, the European Union set up a 5G research project in November 2012 (the key technology in the field of wireless mobile communications in the--metis of the 2020 Information Society). It is reported that the project is composed of 29 members, including Ericsson, Huawei, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens, France Telecom, Telefónica, NTT DoCoMo and other major global telecommunications equipment manufacturers and operators, as well as AAU, Aalto, CTH and other 10 universities and research institutions, Even including the non-telecom industry BMW Group, Anite, Elektrobit and so on.

The objectives set by the EU Metis 5G Project for 5G Communication technologies include: in terms of capacity, 5G communication technology will increase the unit area mobile data traffic by 1000 times times than 4G; in the transmission rate, the typical user data rate is increased 10 to 100 times times, the peak transmission rate can reach 10Gbps ( 4G is 100Mbps, end-to-end delay is shortened by 5 times times; In terms of accessibility: the number of networked devices increases by 10 to 100 times times; in terms of reliability: Low-power MMC (machine equipment) has a 10 times-fold increase in battery duration.

Afif Osseriran said Metis will explore the goals of the EU 5G project team by increasing capacity, improving energy efficiency, reducing costs and improving spectrum utilization to fully support the needs of the network community.

Global or shared one standard

According to the plan of the EU Metis 5G Project group, the EU 5G project plans to complete the basic theoretical work of exploring new architecture, basic principles and system concepts by 2015, and to reach a global consensus; from 2015 to 2018, with the further development of the basic principles, 5G will enter system optimization , standardization, and the stage of the field test; From 2018 to 2020, 5G will enter the commercial trial stage.

The EU expects 5G to be commercially available worldwide by 2020.

Currently, the EU 5G project has divided 8 working groups, each group has the relevant operators and equipment operators responsible for the development of specific technology and scenario solution design. Among them, DoCoMo is responsible for scene research, Huawei is responsible for the wireless Link concept, rung is responsible for multiple nodes, multiple antenna transmission, NSN responsible for many rats, multi-layer network, Nokia is responsible for spectrum research, Ericsson is responsible for overall project management, standard development and release, system design and performance indicators.

Afif Osseiran introduced that the global 5G research is not only the members of these projects, but also includes Samsung, China Mobile and other enterprises and institutions. The EU Metis project team hopes to reach a consensus on standards with a number of 5G agencies around the world to facilitate the commercialization of future 5G technologies.

Ericsson Wireless products expert Chen Ming said, and 3G, 4G, the standards of the competition is different, in the 5G era, the world will be expected to share a standard. He said that from the era of LTE, the global mobile communication standards have been a total integration trend.

It is understood that the world's two 4G standard LTE-FDD and LTE in the core network only 5% difference, in the wireless access side also only 10% difference. Chen said that in the 5G era, this trend of integration will become more obvious, because the industry chain parties are aware that, in the globalization of communication technology today, it is difficult for either party to develop a new set of communication standards alone. And the global use of a set of communication standards, the industrial chain are beneficial to all parties.
