AMD has started delivering 16 of nuclear server chips for cloud computing

This is a positive move for AMD, which wants to reverse the decline in the server chip market.

In a statement, AMD said that servers configured for Interlagos would be listed for sale in the fourth quarter. However, because the server will typically be marketed shortly after the chip is delivered, Dien Mackallon, Dean McCarron, chief analyst at market research firm Mercury, suspects that the server that configures Interlagos will soon be on sale.

AMD spokeswoman said the company will release detailed information about Interlagos in the fourth quarter, including clock frequency and energy consumption.

Interlagos belongs to Hao long 6200 chip series, using Bulldozer micro-architecture. AMD has said that, compared with the current 12 core Hao long chip, bulldozer performance is 50% higher than the memory throughput. Bulldozer set floating-point unit and CPU (central processing unit) in one, can be less energy consumption in each clock cycle to complete more operations.

AMD issued a statement saying that Interlagos applies to cloud computing and virtualized workloads.

The market share of AMD server chips was only 5.5% in the second quarter of this year, with Intel at 94.5%, according to IDC, a marketing research firm. AMD last month appointed Rori Ride (Rory Read) as head of the executive. One of the priorities that Reid needs to accomplish is to revive AMD's server chip business, analysts say.
