The world's first human trail of the new coronavirus vaccine was launched in the US. According to the Associated Press, four volunteers received the vaccine in Seattle.
The vaccine does not cause
novel coronavirus pneumonia, but contains a copy of the harmless gene code that causes disease. Experts say it will take several months to know if the vaccine and other vaccines in development will work.
On Monday local time, the first volunteer to receive the injection was Seattle-based Jennifer Haller, 43, with two children. She told the Associated Press: "This is a great opportunity for me to contribute. "
Scientists worldwide are accelerating the pace of vaccine development.
The National Institutes of Health-funded human trial bypassed the usual check-up: ensuring the vaccine can trigger an immune response in animals.
However, the biotechnology company Moderna Therapeutics, which participated in the human trial, said the vaccine was made under test.
Dr John Tregoning, an
infectious disease specialist at Imperial College London, said: "This vaccine uses existing technology. It has reached a very high standard, using what we know is safe for human use. And will be very tightly controlled for those involved in the trial. "
"Yes, it is going very fast, but this is a race against coronavirus, not a competition between scientists, and it is done for the benefit of humanity."
Typical vaccines, such as measles, are made from weakened or killed viruses. However, the "mRNA-1273" vaccine for this experiment was not made of the virus that caused
Covid-19. Instead, it was developed from genetic codes that scientists have been able to replicate in laboratory-made viruses, hoping to stimulate the body's own immune system to fight infection.
Volunteers participating in human experiments were given different doses of injections. They will be vaccinated twice every 28 days. But even with these initial safety tests, any potential vaccine may still take up to 18 months to become available to the general public.
