What is Data compression?

Here, Data compression is the windows 2000 built-in characteristics on NTFS partition. In theory, compression works by replacing many characters of repeated information with a few characters, and transmitting only one copy of repeated sequences of data. It is not a tool, such as WinRAR or WinZip, but built-in characteristics on NTFS partition.

Data compression is used to store files using less disk space, therefore enabling you to optimize storage capacity.

 

Rules for treating the compression state of files and folders within or between NTFS partition, or between NTFS and non-NTFS partitions.

 

·        Rule1: When you copy a file or folder within an NTFS partition, the file or folder inherits the compression state of the target folder.

·        Rule2: If you move a file or folder within an NTFS partition, the file or folder retains its original compression state.

·        Rules3: If you copy a file or folder between NTFS partitions, the file or folder inherits the compression state of the target folder.

·        Rule4: When you move a file or folder between NTFS partitions, the file or folder inherits the compression state of the target folder.

·        Rule5: You must keep in mind when copying and moving compressed files and folders is what Windows 2000 or later supports compression only for NTFS partitions. When you move or copy a compressed file or folder to a non-NTFS partition or floppy disk, Windows 2000 automatically uncompresses the file or folder.

 

 

Confused

You may be confused with Rule 2 and Rule 4. The key point is on the within an NTFS partition or between NTFS partitions. Windows 2000 treats a move between partitions as a Copy, Paste, Delete action, so according Rule3, the files inherit the compression state of the target folder.
