Open Source Cloud Computing survey: Thunder Rolling misgivings

OpenStack, Cloudstack and eucalyptus are all open source cloud computing platforms that can help companies "clone" Amazon cloud in the data center, and have been widely watched by the industry in recent years. But are companies really starting to apply these technologies?

Last week, open-source it monitoring and management tool provider Zenoss released an Open-source Cloud technology application Report, with 600 sample respondents from Zenoss's 100,000 users, including system administrators, developers and other IT professionals.

Although the Zenoss survey sample does not represent the entire cloud computing market, it still opens up a window for us to understand the actual needs of the users, and the following are some of the data highlights in the report:

Mostly on the sidelines.

Most (82.9%) of respondents have not adopted any open source cloud systems, but 56.9% said they would consider deploying one or more Open-source cloud computing systems in the next two years, of which 62.8% said that openstack,46.8% would consider Apache Cloudstack, only 23.8% consider using Eucalyptus.

Why use open source cloud technology

Quality and flexibility are the two points of concern for respondents to the open source cloud system. Respondents also value open standards for open source cloud systems and their community development. In response to the question of why open source cloud computing systems were used, 60.1% per cent of respondents mentioned flexibility, and 56% per cent said that open standards and api,51.3% respondents mentioned cost savings.

Evaluation criteria of open source cloud technology

75.5% of respondents said that "the efficiency and performance of virtualization technology" is the most important criterion to judge Open source cloud computing technology, 64.2% is "community ecosystem quality", and 51.9% of respondents think that "the project adopts appropriate open source license (such as Apache, GPL, etc.)".

Reasons for not adopting open source cloud technology

Of the respondents who have not yet used open source cloud computing systems, 38.2% point out that "immature" is the main reason for not deploying open source cloud. Other concerns include "support" (30.8%) and "Security" (29.2%).

PAAs under the cold shoulder

Most respondents (83.4%) did not use PAAs, only 30.3% were interested. 16.6% of the respondents who have used PAAs, Google APP engine is the most popular, with 51% of them, followed by Microsoft's azune18.9% and cloud Foundry 15.6%.
