According to foreign media reports, the world's largest electronics producer Foxconn plans to invest 40 million U.S. dollars in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in two years to increase production of high-end products.
The investment could bring 500 jobs to the local area, with 30 million dollars to be used to build new plants, mainly for high-tech products such as precision instruments and electric car cables.
In addition, Foxconn will donate 10 million dollars to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg to study robotics.
Mr Gou, the founder and chairman of Hon Hai, said the move was in response to U.S. President Barack Obama's call for a revival of "Made in America". The investment in Harrisburg was due to the fact that Foxconn already had some local operations. However, Apple's representative products such as the iphone and the ipad will continue to be assembled overseas.
"We're not going to bring simple manual operations to the United States, and we're going to bring in more technical work," Mr. Gou said after a meeting with Pennsylvania officials in Washington. ”
Earlier, Mr Obama had said it was a priority to "revive American manufacturing". In last year's campaign, he said he would create 1 million manufacturing jobs for Americans by 2017. In the past few decades, the US has lost millions of jobs as companies have moved factories from the United States to countries and regions with lower labour costs.
In recent years, Foxconn has been on the mainland in turmoil. Meanwhile, rising labour costs in developing countries are one reason why Foxconn is shifting its investment focus.
