) How to: Install SQL Server compact 3.5 on a device

To deploy an application that uses SQL Server compact 3.5 or a smart device that runs the program for testing, the target device or simulation program must have SQL Server compact 3.5 installed.

Some devices are installed with SQL Server compact 3.5 in the Rom. On other devices, you must install them in Ram. For more information, see device functions and required development tools.

There are two ways to Install SQL Server compact 3.5 on a device or simulation program:

• Deploy a hosted smart device application that references SQL Server compact 3.5. When you deploy an application, Visual Studio automatically installs SQL Server compact 3.5 on the target device.

• If you deploy an unmanaged device application or run a smart device test, perform the manual installation steps described in the following procedure.

Manually Install SQL Server compact 3.5 on the device

1. Connect the device to a computer or insert the simulation program into the base.

   For more information, see How to: insert the device simulation program into the base and remove the base.

   Note:
   Windows Mobile Device Center or Microsoft ActiveSync must be installed on your computer.

2. On the desktop, start Windows Resource Manager and go to the folder drive: \ Program Files \ Microsoft SQL Server compact edition \ v3.5 \ devices \ wce400 or wce500 \ CPU architecture type.

   Note:
   Files in wce400 are used to run on Windows CE 4.x-based devices, such as Pocket PC 2003. Files in wce500 are used to run on Windows CE 5.x-based devices, such as Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6.

3. Use Windows Resource Manager to copy the following files to a folder on the device:

   1. Sqlce. Platform. processor. Cab

   2. (Optional) sqlce. Dev. Platform. processor. Cab-query the Analyzer Application

   3. (Optional) sqlce. REPL. Platform. processor. Cab-copy support.

   Note:
   These CAB files are named based on the supported platform and CPU architecture.

4. On the device, start file resource manager and go to the folder where the cab file is copied.

5. Click or click the cab file to start the installation.

6. "File resource manager" will automatically call wceload.exe to install the SQL Server compact 3.5 cab file. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
