Introduction: The Java™ platform is known for its stability and its community is quite active, but that does not mean that Java technology is mature enough. Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems is the latest change in the process of redefining the Java industry. To get a sense of the information, the Java Technology Zone editor Jenni Aloi held a developerWorks round table of 9 thinkers in the-java community-discussing the current situation and trends in Java technology, culture, and industry.

Since Oracle announced its intention to buy Sun Microsystems last year, the Java developer community has begun to argue about changes in the Java landscape and how it will affect the future of the Java platform.

In fact, the development of Java technology has always been a contentious topic, some of whom believe that the technology has come to an end in its 15th year. As a result, the industry is stunned by the outstanding recovery of the Java platform and Library, as enterprise developers have begun to address the problem of solution reliability and scalability.

As Oracle's takeover work settles and Java 7 is scheduled to be released later this year, the Java leadership Community needs to host a roundtable-developers, architects, and analysts (corporate and independent)-and gain insights on current and latest trends in Java technology, culture, and industry.

From anticipation to surprise, reactions varied, but eventually began to think about the technical expertise and broad work of the participants in the Java platform. Heartfelt thanks to the participants in the Round table: Dan Allen, Neal Ford, Andrew Glover, Richard Hightower, Mik Kersten, Christopher J. Mackie, Alex Miller, Ted Newar D, J. Steven Perry. Note: The views and comments of the attendees do not represent IBM's view. For more information about IBM's latest activities around the Java platform, see Chris Bailey's "a new era of Java technology, IBM style: Java Technology", which describes some of the major enhancements that have been brought through the Oracle Java 7 specification, as well as IBM's Additional value-added features for the. Trent Gray-donald, the technical director of IBM SDK for Java 7, also talked about future changes in this podcast.

2010 of Java Technology

To start the discussion, we asked the attendees what the biggest challenge and opportunity the java-based developers face today. Although the answers are different, the basic themes are the same: the complexity of the Java platform and the related WEB application framework, which adds to the inherent challenges of today's software development.

"Even before you start editing code, a typical Java WEB application will use a 15-MB framework," said Alex Miller, "which has made my work harder from the start, and I have 10 of Java development experience." ”

Mik Kersten agreed: "The size of our systems is growing, and our brain capacity is still so large." ”

At the same time, according to Dan Allen's point of view, the pressure of delivery is not small. "Developers cannot afford to develop code that does nothing to the application business logic, especially to solve the problem that has been resolved," he said. ”
