Q:

I would like to ask Mr. David Axmark about the proportion of users who buy MySQL databases globally? For the second question, please tell us what the industry attitude towards digital copyright will be after the third version of GPL is released. Will SQL support this?

David Axmark:

I do not know how many ratios there are. I guess it is. The reason I don't know is that I don't pay attention to the number of commercial users. GPL3 is more concise and internationalized. GPL3 has made a lot of legal protection in terms of database, but details about digital copyrights are still controversial. There is indeed such a dispute over digital copyrights. The main controversy is how many rights can be used for free? I think this dispute can be resolved soon.

Q:

I would like to ask a question about the license agreement, the latest MySQL5.0 version under development for the commercial version, what protocol is adopted for the new MySQL version, and what kind of plan is there for charging?

David Axmark:

MySQL versions have been available since 2001, and MySQL 5.0 has been announced. It is now released as MySQL 5.1.

Q:

RedHat puts forward a saying that the service is software. I want to know what MySQL thinks about the service model? Do you agree to this statement or do you have another service model? The establishment of our R & D center today is undoubtedly great news for MySQL users in China. Are there any users targeting China during the process of entering China, what kind of service plans does the community and MySQL Enterprise users in China have?

David Axmark:

I fully agree with the concept of RedHat. In China, we are the same as MySQL users around the world and can enjoy subscription and service. MySQL is open-source. The difference is that individual users need to download and maintain their own services from the community, and enterprise users need to buy a commercial version to get certain services.

Q:

How about compatibility of MySQL databases with mainstream databases? My concern is that most of our enterprise's applications are developed on other mainstream data. Can we make a smooth transition? The second question is, do MySQL development tools use their own development tools or third-party development tools? Is there a Chinese version?

David Axmark:

Migration mainly depends on your applications. In many cases, some migration is very easy, and some migration is very difficult. The key is your application. Currently, large databases have comprehensive functions, but they must be dependent on performance reliability and ease of use. We have our own development tools and support third-party development tools combined with MySQL. Third-party development tools may be hand-written.
