ANALYST: Oracle may force a big data bundling system

Some analysts said that earlier this month, Oracle began to ship large data machines (OracleBigDataAppliance ), this will force major competitors such as IBM, HP, and SAP to come up with Hadoop products closely bound with hardware, software, and other tools. On the day of shipment, Oracle announced that its new product would run Cloudera's ApacheHadoop implementation.

Some analysts said that earlier this month, Oracle began to ship Big Data machines (Oracle Big Data Appliance ), this will force major competitors such as IBM, HP, and SAP to come up with Hadoop products closely bound with hardware, software, and other tools.

On the day of shipment, Oracle announced that its new product would run Cloudera's Apache Hadoop implementation and management software.

Tightly bound big data machines include Sun server hardware (18 Linux-based x86 Sun servers with 216 processor cores, GB of memory, and TB of raw hard disk space) and Oracle NoSQL database, open-source distribution of R statistics software, and Oracle Java HotSpot virtual machine copy.

The big data machine provides 40 Gb InfiniBand access between multiple nodes for Hadoop deployment, many of which are connected through Ethernet. George Lumpkin, vice president of Oracle Data Warehouse product management, points out that multiple racks can be configured as one cluster.

Lumpkin added that Oracle began to ship the Big Data Connector drive this month, it is used for data exchange between big data machines and several other Oracle products (including Oracle Database 11g, Exadata data warehouse, online transaction processing equipment, and new Exalytics Business Intelligence machines.

Last fall, Oracle announced big data machines and NoSQL databases at the OpenWorld User Conference.

Ventana Research analyst David Menninger said this product is more likely to encourage IT managers to pay close attention to bundling systems that provide "one-stop services" for the company's data needs.

Menninger said that Oracle systems are designed to manage and analyze datasets such as telemetry data, clickstream data, or other log data. These datasets are often too large or not suitable for storing in databases.

James Kobielus, analyst at Forrester Research, said: In fact, if the IT manager accepts the bundled Hadoop system, then mainstream technology vendors that have invested a lot of energy in Big Data R & D will have to follow suit. He added that [multi-bundle systems will] are very useful to the market and provide customers with more options for available products.

Kobielus said that so far, most enterprise-level Hadoop deployment has been completed by internal IT engineers, and the company has to purchase hardware and software licenses for integration.

Kobielus said that the growth of the popular open-source Apache Hadoop framework will further increase the choice of big data packets for IT managers. Oracle's Cloudera Hadoop deployment decision will be advantageous for both enterprise users and Oracle itself. When Oracle first published a big data machine, it was expected that it would run on Oracle's own Hadoop.

Menninger adds that choosing Hadoop deployment that has been accepted by people means that Oracle does not have to create another deployment. If Oracle and its own deployment are created, this will expose a potential weakness that competitors may seize.
