1. Peer network Introduction

Obviously, the concept of "Working Group" is far less extensive than that of "Domain", so the number of users that can be accompanied by peer networks is also very limited. In a peer-to-peer network, the number of computers is usually no more than 20, so the peer-to-peer network is relatively simple. In a peer-to-peer network, computers on the peer network have the same functions, with no Master/Slave division. Computers on any node on the Internet can be used as network servers, providing resources for other computers, or as workstations, to share the resources of other servers. Either computer can be used as a server or workstation at the same time. In addition to sharing files, you can also share the printer on the peer network. The printer on the peer network can be used by any node on the network, just as convenient as using a local printer. Peer networks do not require dedicated servers for network support or other components to improve network performance. Therefore, peer networks are much cheaper.

The peer network has the following features:

(1) Small and medium-sized enterprises with fewer network users and generally less than 20 computers, suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises with a large number of application networks;

(2) All network users are in the same region;

(3) network security is not the most important issue for networks.

It has the following advantages: low network cost, simple network configuration and maintenance.

Its shortcomings are also quite obvious, mainly including: low network performance, poor data confidentiality, scattered file management, and large computer resource occupation.

2. Peer Network Structure

Although the structure of the peer network is relatively simple, according to the specific application environment and needs, the peer network also has many implementation methods due to its scale and transmission media type. The following describes the implementation methods:

1. Peer network cabling skills for two machines

This type of peer network has many construction methods. In terms of transmission media, twisted pair wires, coaxial cables, and series and parallel cables can be used. Only the corresponding network cable, cable, and network card are required for the network equipment. If strings and parallel cables are used, you can save the investment of the network card and directly connect the two machines with strings and parallel cables, obviously, this is the cheapest way to establish peer networks. In this method, "String/parallel cable" is commonly known as "Zero modem", so this method is also known as "remote communication. However, the transmission rate of the network connected by the string and parallel cables is very low, and the production of the string and parallel cables is quite troublesome. In today's low network adapter, this equal network connection method is less useful.

2. Peer network cabling skills for three machines

If the number of computers connected to the network is not 2, but 3, then the series and parallel cables cannot be used for connection, but the twisted pair wires or coaxial cables must be used as the transmission medium, in addition, the number of NICS is not small. If the twisted pair wires are used as the transmission medium, there are two methods based on the network structure:

(1) One method is to use a dual-nic bridge, that is, to install two NICs on one of the computers, and install one Nic on each of the other two computers, and then connect them with twisted pair wires, then configure the system;

(2) Add a hub as a collection line device to form a star-to-peer network. All three machines are directly connected to the hub. From the characteristics of this method, although you can save a network card, but you need to buy a hub, the network cost will be higher than the previous one, but the performance is much better.

If the coaxial cable is used as the transmission medium, you do not need to buy a hub. You only need to connect the three coaxial cable cables directly. Although only three NICs are needed, the total investment is similar to that of twisted pair cables because coaxial cables are more expensive than twisted pair cables.

3. Peer network cabling skills for more than 3 machines

There are only two peer network construction methods for more than three machines:

(1) A collection line device (HUB or switch) is used to form a star network;

(2) Use a coaxial cable for direct connection. Although this type of peer network can also adopt the dual network card bridge mode, that is, in addition to the first and last two computers are configured with dual network card, but this method requires almost two times the network card, the cost is high, and the dual Nic configuration has high requirements on computer hardware resources, so it is impossible for someone to use this method to achieve peer network connection between multiple computers.

The preceding section describes the hardware configurations of the same network. In terms of software systems, the same network cabling technique is not flexible, and almost all operating systems can configure the same network, including dedicated network operating systems, such as Windows NT Server/2000 Server/2003 Server, Windows 9x/ME/2000 Pro/XP, and earlier dos systems.
