Cold attitude towards website high-end content operations

Recently I have read two more emotional articles. The first article was written by the famous ITEye (former JavaEye) community webmaster in China to explain how he severely cracked down on low-quality content and even cracked down on low-quality replies. Every year, many people tell him that you can't help but beat the station. However, every year, ITEye throws traffic. Finally, the webmaster concluded that the pursuit of original and high-quality technical exchanges serves high-end software talents.

Finally, the webmaster concluded that the pursuit of original and high-quality technical exchanges to serve high-end software talents is the principle of my website construction. I will not lower my principles to accommodate low-level bad habits. The fact is that when he abides by the general principle of iron, the high quality of content will attract more readers.

For example, if JavaEye only provides the best services for one thousand mid-and high-end users and does not hesitate to clean 10 thousand middle-end users who do not comply with the community's code of conduct, it seems that there are too many people to drive away, it's a little scary, but the mid-and high-end users will be able to produce high-quality content, attracting 0.1 million visitors.

So what if JavaEye reduces its operating standards and expands its service targets from 1 thousand high-end users to 5 thousand users with more complex components? This action will inevitably lead to a decline in the quality of content and communication. 500 middle and high-end users may have left. I think this is too watery and not professional enough. As a result, the quality of the content is further reduced, and only 10 thousand viewers are attracted.

There are many similar cases in the forum. For example, azelas National Geographic is well-known (crazy) with a strong title. it is also the most popular World of Warcraft player forum in several years.

In the second article, the Moonlight Blog will talk about the use experience of Panoramio. The Panoramio situation is more similar to ours. it is also a photo sharing website. it is very strict in content management. it is not allowed to pass that picture. basically, only landscape pictures are welcome, the subject of the photo cannot be people, pets, animals, plants, flowers, close-up, or logo. We can foresee how photography users in China will complain-but it is so harsh that Panoramio's content on Google Maps marks a reputation and is eventually acquired by Google.

Imagine that if Panoramio moved to the photo user, photos of animals in close-up of portraits are allowed to be stored in the database, and these photos cannot describe the scenery environment at all, then Panoramio loses its features and becomes a vulgar photo sharing website. What are the characteristics of Panoramio? It is a real-time scenery image library that uses photos to learn about the world scenery, rather than the photographer's level and feelings. Then, when it creates a unique Panoramio through strict discipline, it will attract a large number of viewers, not only to win the reader group, but also to make the authors who agree with its ideas feel unsatisfied elsewhere.

Now, I believe everyone can understand what I mean. This involves several previous internal debates. We should not focus on how to accommodate low-level photography users, bad habit photography players, no matter how many of them, how enthusiastic they are, and how they are hurt under the management of the iron. The new Pat is about to be released. you may wish to reiterate the three core values of the future:

  1. Presentation of excellent quality original works
  2. Provide a fair content and author grading mechanism
  3. Establish a bridge between high-quality photographic works and mass browsing users

Under these three principles, our core users must be high-end photography enthusiasts who use the content they produce to attract more viewers. Therefore, any factors that may cause interference to core users should be relentlessly ruled out-especially inappropriate behaviors of low-end and middle-end users, including content that is not limited to poor release quality, and so on.

In previous discussions, we mentioned internally the voice of "protecting new photography", which means they have a higher degree of loyalty. I do not disagree with this stance, but I think it is not our policy to protect new people. protecting core users is our policy. The reason is simple. only products with scarce resources can win the future. New people cannot be scarce resources in the past, present, and future. Even if we get 10 thousand ordinary photography enthusiasts who have grown up from new people and are very loyal to our products, we may not feel as deep as 500 people, however, the core users who are still posting images here are more valuable.

From another perspective, if we can focus on serving core users and put their interests first, why can't we get the loyalty of core users?

In the past, I wrote a long article about PP's failure summary. The most important thing is that I failed to master enough core users that are active enough. In the process of product design and operation, there are too few considerations for them, and the pursuit is comprehensive. This is actually stupid. If we start from our own emotions and think more about normal photography users-the interests of ordinary users who are just as ordinary as we are, then this approach is no better than in the past. Therefore, I do not recommend that you care too much for new photography users. The product focus should be on core users. However, no core user is willing to be adjacent to low-level works. Therefore, it is necessary to continue to raise the entrance threshold for photography works, display areas reach the average level of core users, and new areas reach a low level of core users.

As for those photographers who have been filtered out, who are enthusiastic but flat, their emotions will be hurt, let them hurt. I only care about the feelings of core users. Specifically, if the core users are very concerned about the high quality of the entire content environment, how hard can we be for low-quality works? If the core users are very concerned about the high quality of the communication environment, how hard can we make comments? The hard and soft hearts of operators will affect the rising trend of the entire product. "Cool" is one of the essential qualities for a large community, because you must eliminate other user behaviors that interfere with the community values and core user experience, and bear their complaints and pains. Even if some core users violate operational rules, they should be punished from the perspective of core values. Do not be afraid of offending people. you are maintaining the quality and order of the community. this is the highest benefit of the whole community user.

Finally, I would like to put everyone to pay attention to the essence of this product: We are a community, a public space where users and content are gathered together and interacted with each other. The scarce resources we strive for can only be high-quality users and high-quality content. do not let the general resources that flood the disaster cause US weakness. When there is an internal conflict between user interests, you must stay on the side of the core user with no cost, and old or rare products will become mediocre. Excellent creators are always a minority. we serve a minority first to serve the majority through their active behaviors.

Only products with scarce resources can win the future.
