1. Select version
I chose debian for a simple reason. I have installed redhat (before fedora) and freebsd, and want to change it. In addition, I also like debian's completely non-commercial colors.
Debian's current stable version is etch, which is too old. The testing version and sid (still in development) version (that is, unstable) are relatively new. I chose testing, a moderate version. the current testing version is lenny.

2. Start Installation
The reason why I chose to install the cd is very simple. I am afraid that the network installation may not work. From debian, it is said that weekly update's cd, disc, plug in the drive and restart!
The installation process is very simple. It is similar to window. Select the language and region. Of course, it is us and english us. Then, configure the network and set the root password (***** guess what it is ), your account and password (**), and then wait, you can choose to install and build from the network in the middle, optional or optional, it doesn't matter.

3. System Upgrade
After the system is installed, it is basically ready for use. gnome Desktop is very good (the display resolution and refresh rate are both correct), and some of them can access the Internet (at least wired can be used, wireless will be done later ), the sound card has been installed, and it seems that the old computer has an old advantage, so you don't have to look for a driver to install it. The Chinese version of the web page can also be displayed, although ugly, this is basically a success.
To make the system as new as possible, update the system. Edit sources. list first.
Sudo vim/etc/apt/sources. list if you are not sudoers, add yourself to sudoers,

Vim/etc/sudoers
Last write, xxxx ALL = (ALL) ALL
Comment out the cd (cd is basically useless). If all etch is changed to lenny, then
Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
After completion, the system is the latest lenny.

4. Editor
Gnome has its own gedit, but I prefer vim to install the full version of vim.
Sudo apt-get install vim
Set it a little bit to darken the highlight and background.
Vim/etc/vim/vimrc
Uncomment syntax on and set background = dark

5. Wireless Networks
There is a small tool called network manager.
Sudo apt-get install networkmanager
Edit ingerfaces
Sudo vim/etc/network/interfaces
Retain auto lo only
Iface lo inet loopback
You can make the networkmanager configure network.
However, wireless may not work at this time. Generally, firmware is missing. Download ipw2200 firmware (v3.0) and cp to the corresponding directory.
Restart the network and the wireless network will work, which is very convenient.

6. Chinese support
Although the newly installed system can browse Chinese webpages, the font is poor and slow. Some Chinese fonts need to be installed.

Reset locale first
Sudo dpkg-reconfigure locale

En_US.UTF8 is selected by default.

Modify preferences ---- fonts and select the font you like.
The Chinese Input Method Uses scim and installs scim pingyin.
Because it is an English operating system, in order to allow the Chinese Input Method to work, in/etc/X11/Xsession. d/to create a file (when x is started, these will be automatically executed again, the number is the execution order), 95 xinput, the Code is as follows:

7. Browser
In debian, firefox is called iceweasel. Considering that some sites are only friendly to ie and firefox, You can hack iceweasel, about: config, and change the value of general. useragent. extra. firefox to firefox.
However, firefox is good on the official firefox website.
Some useful plug-ins can be used, such as All in one gestures, download status bar, google notebook, and scribefire.

8. Blog writer
It is very useful to use the firefox plug-in scribefire, but for live space, you must first activate email publish in live space and then post the blog with the username and secret word.

9. Email client
I used thunderbird because evolution has been deleted by me (Saving space and removing all unused apt-get ).

10. Instant Messaging
Pidgin, msn and qq can be used. However, qq often modifies the communication protocol and needs to be modified. It has been google and cannot be thought of first (^_^ ).

11. bt Tool
Sometimes, bt is also necessary. We recommend a small tool, deluge, which now has the deb package,

12. Music player
Unfortunately, foobar does not have or will not have a linux version. However, the winamp-style audacious is also good (It reminds people of the very old winamp ).
Apt-get install audacious
Make it support ape. This is troublesome because you need to manually compile the plug-in (strong relevance). But now there is a ready-made deb package. This will take advantage of ubuntu resources.

13. mathematical tools
I chose maxima, which is good to use. I also installed grace, which is sometimes useful for drawing.
