Currently, SQL SERVER 2008 must run Setup as an administrator for local installations. If you install SQL Server from a remote share, you must use a domain account that has read and execute permissions on the remote share.

Before you upgrade the database engine, review the following topics:

Upgrade to SQL Server 2008

Hardware and software requirements for installing SQL Server 2008

Check parameters for System Configuration Checker

Security considerations for Installing SQL Server

Backward compatibility of the SQL Server database engine

Note: If you are affected by a known issue in the installer, you may need to apply the cumulative update to the original media before installing SQL Server 2008.

Insert SQL Server installation media, and then double-click Setup.exe in the root folder. To install from a network share, move to the root folder in the share, and then double-click Setup.exe. If the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Installation dialog box appears, click OK to install the prerequisites, and then click Cancel to exit the SQL Server 2008 installation.

If the 3.5 SP1 Installation dialog box appears, select the appropriate check box to accept the. NET Framework 3.5 SP1 license Agreement. Click Next. To exit the SQL Server 2008 installation, click Cancel. When the. NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installation completes, click Finish.

Windows Installer 4.5 is also required and may be installed by the installation Wizard. If you are prompted to restart your computer, restart your computer, and then run SQL Server 2008 Setup.exe again.

After the prerequisite installation is complete, the Setup Wizard launches the SQL Server installation Center. To upgrade an existing instance of SQL Server 2008, click Upgrade from SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005.

If you need to use the installer support files, SQL Server Setup installs them. If Setup instructs you to restart your computer, restart it before continuing.

The System Configuration Checker will run the discovery operation on your computer. To continue, click OK. The installation log file is created for your installation.

On the Product Key page, click the appropriate option button to indicate whether you are upgrading to a free version of SQL Server or that you have a PID key for the production version of the product.

On the License Terms page, read the license agreement, and then select the appropriate check box to accept the license terms and conditions. Click "Next" to continue. To end the installer, click Cancel.

On the Select Instance page, specify the instance of SQL Server that you want to upgrade.

The features you want to upgrade are selected in advance on the feature Selection page. When you select a feature name, a description of each component group is displayed in the right pane. Note that you cannot change the features you want to upgrade, and you cannot add functionality during the upgrade operation.

On the Instance configuration page, specify whether to install a default instance or a named instance.

Instance ID-By default, the instance name is used as the instance ID. This is used to identify the installation directory and registry keys for an instance of SQL Server. This is the default for both the default instance and the named instance. For the default instance, the instance name and instance ID are MSSQLSERVER. To use a Non-default instance ID, select the Instance ID check box and provide a value.

A typical SQL Server 2008 standalone instance (either the default instance or a named instance) does not use a Non-default value for the instance ID check box.

Instance root-By default, the instance root directory is C:/Program files/microsoft SQL server/. To specify a non-default root directory, use the fields provided, or click Browse to locate an installation folder.

All SQL Server Service packs and upgrades will be applied to each component of the SQL Server instance.

Detected instances and features-the grid will show instances of SQL Server on the computer running Setup. If a default instance is already installed on your computer, you must install a named instance of SQL Server 2008. Click "Next" to continue.

The Disk Space Requirements page calculates the disk space required for the specified functionality and compares disk space requirements to the available disk space on the computer that is running Setup.

The rest of the workflows in this topic depend on the features you want to install. You may not see all of the pages, depending on the choices you make.

On the server Configuration-Service Account page, specify the logon account for the SQL Server service. The actual services that are configured on this page depend on the features you want to upgrade.

Authentication and logon information will inherit from an earlier instance of SQL Server. You can assign the same logon account to all SQL Server services, or you can configure individual service accounts separately. You can also specify whether the service is started automatically, manually started, or disabled. Microsoft recommends that you configure individual service accounts separately to ensure that the SQL Server service is granted the minimum permissions that they must have to complete their tasks.

To specify the same logon account for all service accounts in this instance of SQL Server, provide the credentials in the field at the bottom of the page.

Security instructions do not use a blank password. Please use a strong password.

After you specify the logon information for the SQL Server service, click Next.

Use the server configuration-Collations tab to specify a Non-default collation for the database engine and analysis Services.

On the full-text Search Upgrade Options page, specify the upgrade options for the upgraded database. For more information, see full-Text Search upgrade options.

On the error and Usage Reports page, specify the information that you want to send to Microsoft to help improve SQL Server. By default, options for error reporting and feature usage are enabled.

Before the upgrade operation begins, the System Configuration Checker runs multiple sets of rules to verify your computer configuration for the SQL Server feature that you specify.

The Prepare for Upgrade page displays a tree view of the installation options that you specified during the installation process. To continue, click Install.

During the installation process, the Progress page provides the appropriate status, so you can monitor the progress of the installation during installation.

When the installation is complete, the finish page provides links to installation summary log files and other important instructions. To complete the SQL Server installation process, click Close.

If Setup instructs you to restart your computer, restart it now. When the installation is complete, be sure to read the message from the Setup wizard.

Subsequent steps

After you upgrade to SQL Server 2008, complete the following tasks:

Registering a server-the upgrade deletes registry settings for an earlier instance of SQL Server. After you upgrade, you must re-register the server.

UPDATE STATISTICS-to help optimize query performance, it is recommended that you update the statistics for all databases after the upgrade. Use the sp_updatestats stored procedure to update statistics in a user-defined table in a SQL Server database.

Update usage counters-in earlier versions of SQL Server, the values of table and index row counts and page counts may become incorrect. To correct any invalid row or page count, it is recommended that you run DBCC updateusage on all databases after the upgrade is complete.

Configure a newly installed SQL Server-to reduce the system's exploitable perimeter, SQL Server will selectively install and enable some key services and features. If you do not understand the place, please tell us!
