What do you think is the most important thing in your work?
  1. A large number of whiteboards and labels for labeling.
  2. Meeting room and video conferencing equipment. In the early stages of design, I was deeply involved, working with designers in the Bay Area, Utah, Switzerland, France, and India, so these things are very necessary.
  3. Smart people. We solve complicated problems for large enterprises, so we need to come up with smart people to get feedback. This is essential.

What is the proportion of management and design in your work?

My job is to inspire others to make cool designs, and an important part of my work is leadership design, leading design by example. Therefore, I will spend a lot of time working with customers to get comments and feedback and present our designs to them. At the same time, in the initial conceptual design phase, I will spend a long time with my team to outline my ideas and create many things. In the end, we will provide many practical solutions for our customers. But like many other big companies, our design team has to do a lot of work, and designers are never enough.

How do you determine that your understanding of product design at a certain time is consistent with what the customer really wants?

When the customer began to frantically seek details, I knew that the solution presented this time was close to their needs. In the early stages, we will intensively present our solutions. When a solution puts customers in a excited state and begins to say "Yes, this is the problem we are trying to solve, it means that this solution is almost what they want. In fact, customers provide us with a lot of inspiration.

What will happen when your inspiration is exhausted?

At this time, I usually introduce other people to use external forces to break the barriers. Several designers are responsible for each of our solutions, and a large cross-functional team is on standby. At this time, I will introduce this team, reiterate the obstacles and problems to them, and ask them to propose their ideas and solutions. In this process, I will try to look at the problem from their perspective, because this is the most useful thing. If I encounter a similar problem in the future, I can use this experience to solve it.

Will you draw a sketch on paper?

Yes, but I have recently moved the sketch area from the paper to the whiteboard. Outside the office, for example, when traveling, I still draw many sketches on my Moleskine notebook. Recently I also bought a larger sketch book to help me draw a sketch.

Where do you get inspiration?

I spent a lot of time researching data visualization, which is a big proposition. People collect big data on the Internet in a variety of interesting ways and then visualize them. In terms of data visualization, the customer also gave me a lot of inspiration. In the process of communicating with us, the customer will bring us many forms to solve the problem, and they are often surprised by the scale of the problem. Finally, there are many smart people in Adobe who have inspired me a lot. All of our team members have doctorate degrees and are dedicated to finding solutions to various problems, some of which are not even known. I believe they are also the great source of Adobe's thoughts.

As a designer, What do you rely on?

Of course it's my team! Edward Tufte, Nathan Yau, and Nicholas Felton are data geniuses, while Dan Roam is different. He is good at using simple communication to solve complex problems.

What is your favorite book?

Within the professional field:

  • Dan Roam, author of napkin, describes how to simplify problems and communicate.
  • The Visual Display of Quantitative Information (no Chinese Version) by Edward Tufte. For me, this book is the Bible. In this book, I found different ways to truly display complex datasets.

Outside of my professional field, I prefer science fiction.

  • Champion breakfast, written by Kurt Vonnegut ). This is one of my favorite books. I like the author's strong personality and humorous communication methods.
What kind of drinks do you like in daily life?

I will choose coffee at work, and beer after work. Now I like beer from a local Salt Lake City winery, namely Spiral Jetty IPA from Epic Brewery. Some people think that Utah is a wine-free place, but it actually has its own award-winning winery.

What music do you listen?

What music to listen to usually depends on my mood

  • Many other instrumental music and soft electronic music

Let's talk about your favorite tools in the creation process.

  • Obviously, Adobe Creative Cloud is one of the most important tools.
  • We will use Illustrator to implement a lot of digital content, even including line diagrams.
  • Fireworks is also important
  • We used Photoshop to create many materials.
  • I use whiteboards, various cool marks, and my favorite sketch. On my walls, the whole wall is a whiteboard and continuous sketch.
  • Use InVison to create a prototype and collect feedback
  • Since I want to attend many meetings, I will use Evernote to take many notes. In addition, I often use Spotify to listen to songs.

When you are busy with a project, how do you bring yourself into the status?

Generally, if I work alone, I will control the pace. I will review the problem, remember it all, locate the user group, and then redefine the goal. One time, I had an idea: I had to sketch it out on the sketchbook and erase it again. Then I kept repeating it until I found what I really wanted. When we work in a team, the basic process is the same, but we collaborate in the studio, use more additional tools for design, and draw our ideas on the whiteboard, or play a game to stimulate creativity.

Effective communication between stakeholders in a large and scattered organization is a great challenge. InVision allows us to share our workflows and quickly collect comments and feedback from both internal and external sources, so that we can constantly reflect these changes in design. It enables supervisors and customers to make reasonable suggestions and participate in the improvement of solutions without waiting for help from developers and engineers. Therefore, it improves the communication efficiency and consolidates the feedback system.

In your opinion, how important is cooperation with designers?

Very important. Cooperation is the core of everything. Everything we do is complex enough to involve so many different people. Without in-depth communication and cooperation, we may never reach the best solution. Therefore, cross-Department communication is very important. We work closely with our product R & D team and actively listen to the opinions of our colleagues from the consulting department. Designers who can propose one-time solutions for their customers often have good ideas for different customers. Their suggestions are very valuable to me.

What is your favorite part in the design process?

This is a bit like "Who is your favorite child ". To solve the problem, we will try our best to adjust the design process and achieve the goal. So I really cannot say that I love a part more than others, because I enjoy it all. I enjoy this kind of design-oriented process.

So what do you think is the most frustrating?

I think one of the most frustrating things is that a good idea can be compromised by business considerations. This is the real world we live in. On the contrary, designers (including me) are often idealists in their hearts. When part of the design is compromised, it's like a part of your body is cut off. Very frustrating, but no way. This is a reality.
