A directory Encryption tool TrueCrypt is provided in Kali. The tool is an open source green encryption volume encryption software that does not need to generate any files to establish a virtual disk on the hard disk. The user can access the drive letter, so the files on the virtual disk are automatically encrypted, and the access needs to be decrypted with a password. TrueCrypt offers a variety of cryptographic algorithms, including AES, Serpent, Twofish, Aes-twofish, and Aes-twofish-serpent. This section describes the use of the TrueCrypt tool.

2.5.1 Creating an encrypted directory

Use the TrueCrypt tool to encrypt the directory. The following steps are shown below.

(1) Start the TrueCrypt tool. Execute the following command at the terminal:

[email protected]:~# truecrypt

After executing the above command, the interface shown in 2.6 will be displayed.

(2) Click the Create Volume button in the interface and the interface shown in 2.7 will be displayed.

(3) In this interface select Create Volume container, here Select the default creation an encrypted File container option, click the Next button, will show the interface shown in 2.8.

(4) This interface selects the volume type, here Select the default standard TrueCrypt volume, click the Next button, will show the interface shown in 2.9.

(5) In this interface click Select File ... button, the interface shown in 2.10 will be displayed.

(6) Specify a name and location for the new volume in this interface, the volume name created here is Cryptvolume and is saved in the/root directory. Then click the "Save" button and the interface shown in 2.11 will be displayed.

(7) In this interface, you can see the name and location of the volume you created earlier. Then click the Next button to display the interface shown in 2.12.

(8) In this interface select the encryption algorithm, here Select the default encryption algorithm AES, and then click the Next button, will show the interface shown in 2.13.

(9) In this interface specify the size of the volume is 10GB, and then click the Next button, will show the interface shown in 2.14.

(10) Enter the password for a volume in the interface and click the Next button to display the interface shown in 2.15.

(11) The interface prompts to set the password too short, the recommended size is 20 characters. If you confirm that you want to use this password, click the "Yes" button and the interface shown in 2.16 will be displayed.

(12) In this interface select the size of the storage to volume file, here Select I'll not store files larger than 4GB on the volume. Then click the Next button to display the interface shown in 2.17.

(13) Select the file system type in this interface, the default is fat. The tool also supports Linux Ext2, Linux EXt3, and Linux EXT4 file types. Select the Linux EXT4 here and click the Next button to display the interface shown in 2.18.

(14) The interface chooses a platform to mount the volume, here choose the second way I will mount the volume-only on Linux, click the Next button and the interface shown in 2.19 is displayed.

(15) Now to format the previously created volume, click the Format button and the interface shown in 2.20 will be displayed.

(16) This interface displays information such as the progress, speed, and time of the formatting. When the process finishes running, the interface shown in 2.21 is displayed.

(17) See the above window to indicate that the TrueCrypt volume was created successfully. At this point, click the OK button and the interface shown in 2.22 will be displayed.

(18) The TrueCrypt volume is now created. If you also want to create another TrueCrypt volume, click the Next button. Otherwise, click the Exit button. When you click the Exit button, you return to the interface shown in Figure 2.6.

2.5.2 Folder decryption

The encrypted directory was created successfully in the previous section. If you want to view the encrypted content, you need to decrypt the volume before you can access it. In order to decrypt the volume, you need to select a slot from the list in Figure 2.6. Then click Select File ... button to open the Cryptvolume volume you just created. When you click the Mount button, the interface shown in 2.23 is displayed.

Enter the password that you set when creating Cryptvolume in this interface, and click the OK button to display the interface shown in 2.24.

From this interface, you can see the mount information of the Cryptvolume volume, the size and location of the volume, and so on. At this point, the user can access the volume by double-clicking the volume or mount point in the slot. When the file operation is complete, you can click the Dismount All button to uninstall the volume.
