Young and Mark Ewing created the Red Hat Company in 1994 and created the world's most widely used Red Hat Linux suite, making a contribution to the popularity of Linux, and the author followed the lead of Red Hat into the Linux world. Red Hat has been a great success, and even many Linux publishers have used many of the code for Red Hat Linux, such as Mandrake, SOT Best, Connectiva, abit, and Kondara. It can be said that Red hat in a sense almost become synonymous with Linux.

April 16, 2001, Red Hat Company officially launched the Red Hat Linux version 7.1. As a loyal user of Red Hat Linux, the first time on their own love machine installed a set of my experience in this article, hoping to help you ride it.

  1th Chapter: System Introduction

1.1 New features of the system

1 using the latest Linux 2.4.2 version of the stable kernel, support more hardware devices, with high performance indicators;

2) using the latest graphics system Xfree86 4.0.3, providing a strong hardware support;

3) introduced a full graphics installation interface, which makes installation simpler;

4 increased the internationalization of language support, but the most hateful is to support the BIG5, but there is no simplified Chinese, really exasperating;

5) significantly improve the support of multiple CPU computers, and for single CPU computer, it provides up to 4G of user process space, while eliminating the limitations of PCI bus, virtual memory can be as high as 64G physical memory, support for multi-user and collective use, is the enterprise-class operating system;

6 provides excellent support for mobile storage devices, including hot-swappable USB devices, Zip drives, and various CD burners. Red Hat Linux 7.1 uses a program module called Updfstab, which enables it to support a variety of mobile storage devices, and it becomes easy to install and uninstall them.

7 added a number of new system configuration tools to facilitate user management and Linux system use, such as apacheconf, bindconf, and printconf, and so on, these tools can facilitate the user through the GUI graphical user interface to configure Apache,bind, and printers. You know, it's complicated to configure several of these services in previous versions. To manually modify a number of parameters;

8 In addition, the support of PCMCIA devices is enhanced, which is very important for users who use PCMCIA devices for laptops;

9 in the security aspects of a lot of repair work, the security default settings to ensure that the port is closed, the new firewall screen can be used to open or close the user arbitrarily;

10 bundled a large number of the latest application software, Server software.

  1.2 System hardware Requirements

The Linux development today, has been out of the previous hardware support bad dilemma, it has its own strength to win the market, now many hardware manufacturers to make their products can work under Linux.

1 Cpu:redhat Linux 7.1 provides support for many CPUs on the installation CD, and you are not blocked from the CPU for installation. But for some older CPUs like Intel 80386, 80486,AMD 486, 5x86, K5, the system provides support but not optimized for these CPUs, which can lead to poor performance. In addition, if you want to build a system with multiple CPUs, the optional CPUs are: Intel Celeron, Pentium, Pentium II, Pentium II Xeon, Pentium III, Pentium III Xeon, Pentium Pro, Pentium with MMX.

2) Motherboard: Red Hat Linux 7.1 supports all X86 compatible motherboards

3) Memory: Recommendation 64M above, preferably 128M

4) CDROM: Supports all IDE interface's optical drive, most SCSI interface's optical drive also can recognize;

5 SCSI card: Supports ADAPTERC 152x, 154x, 274x, 284x, 294x, 394, aic7890-based cards, and most popular SCSI cards. You do not need the device unless you have a storage device for the SCSI connector.

6) video card:

For Linux systems, in the character terminal mode, all graphics cards are supported. However, if you want your display to work under the X Window graphical interface, you need to set the corresponding settings according to the graphics card. In the early days, graphics cards often bothered beginners, but now the graphics support has become much better. Most graphics cards are able to be identified during installation and are automatically completed. The only common video card that encounters an unrecognized one is Intel's i810, and you can find help on Intel's website (http://support.intel.com/support/gr...xinstal.htm).

7) sound card:

With more sound card support in red Hat Linux 7.1, even the creative Labs Sound Blaster Live sound card can be "Plug and Play". However, some small brands of sound cards often appear to support the bad situation.

8 Network card: Support Ne2000 compatible network card, the majority of PCI network also support better.

9) Other:

Redhat Linux 7.1 supports all X86 compatible motherboards, supports all commercially available keyboards, mice, floppy drives, supports all branded memory, requires at least 8 m of RAM, and is recommended for up to 64M.

There is a detailed hardware compatibility List on Red Hat's website where you can get more detailed information: http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/genp...gi?pagename=7.1
