Malicious programs turn infected computers into Web proxies
Anonymous proxy is vital to protecting users' online privacy, but it is dangerous if a person's computer becomes a proxy server without consent. Researchers from the security company Palo Alto experts have discovered a new malicious program family ProxyBack that can turn infected computers into proxy servers. The computer infected with ProxyBack first establishes a connection with the proxy server controlled by the attacker, accepts commands, and then acts as the HTTP tunnel route traffic. Currently, the major target of infection is educational institutions in Europe. Researchers have found that more than 11 thousand computers have been infected with this malicious program. They believe that the paid proxy service named buyproxy.ru is related to the malicious program. Buyproxy.ru claims that it runs 700 to 3000 proxy servers every day.
