Oracle's support for Linux includes running Oracle.com and its internal email system on the open system platform, but it cannot quickly convert its database into open source code format.
Larry Ellison, chairman and CEO of the company, said in a keynote speech at the LinuxWorld exhibition and conference that he supported Linux because it "is cheaper, faster, and more reliable than any other environment ."
Ellison said: "Linux is rapidly entering the Enterprise, and more companies will rely on it to process the most important data. I think we are developing very fast in terms of Linux cluster technology, which is hard to match with any other single technology. We didn't stop doing propaganda. We did use Linux to run our own business ."
According to Ellison, Oracle is doing its best. "By the end of this year, all middle-layer internal production of our company will run Linux" to complete various applications, such as payroll, accounts, customer relationship management, sales personnel automation, marketing and human resources.
However, Oracle databases are not provided in the Open Source format like Linux, because they are applications that do not have any flash. Ellison said: "This will be the final implementation of open source code format applications. If the operating system is paralyzed, You can restart it. If the database crashes, you have to retype all the data, which is too time-consuming ."
Ellison said they will deploy Linux in enterprise applications through the company's real application cluster (RAC) technology, because RAC provides ideal reliability, scalability, and security. Oracle wants to use its cluster technology to make Linux faster, cheaper, and more secure and reliable than IBM hosts.
His slides show that a 32-processor Linux cluster running Intel machines costs $0.35 million, while an IBM host with similar performance costs $14.8 million.
According to Ellison, any application running on the Oracle database can be deployed in a Linux cluster, which is faster and more reliable. Currently, RAC technology can easily process 16 network nodes. after next year's improvement, it can process 64 or 128 network nodes.
