The history and advantages of SVG

In January 2003, SVG 1.1 was established as a standard.

The organizations that are involved in defining SVG are solar micro systems, Adobe, Apple, IBM, and Kodak.

Compared to other image formats, the advantage of using SVG is that:

• SVG can be read and modified by a lot of tools (such as Notepad)
• SVG is smaller in size and more compressible than JPEG and GIF images.
• SVG is scalable
• SVG images can be printed with high quality at any resolution
• SVG can be amplified when the image quality is not degraded
• The text in the SVG image is optional and searchable (well suited for map creation)
• SVG can be run with Java technology
• SVG is an open standard
• The SVG file is purely XML

The main competitor of SVG is Flash.

The biggest advantage of SVG compared to Flash is that it is compatible with other standards such as XSL and DOM. Flash, however, is a proprietary technology that is not open source.

SVG files are supported by all browsers today, except for Internet Explorer, which requires a plugin to be installed. Plugins are free, such as the Adobe SVG Viewer.
