The Linux system provides two basic interfaces that are available to the user for operation: command line and desktop.

One, command line

A command line in a Linux system, often referred to as a shell.

The shell accepts the keyboard input command and passes it to the operating system for execution.

Thus, the user interacts with the Unix-like operating system through the Shell.

Shell is included in almost all Unix-like operating system distributions.

The Shell itself is a software. Common to have Bash Shell, C shell,k shell,tcsh.

Second, the desktop

In the current version of Unix-like systems, the common desktop environments are: GNOME, KDE.

The desktop environment operates like a Windows operating system.

A desktop environment typically also provides a terminal emulator for accessing the Shell.
