Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization is a powerful and comprehensive server virtualization platform that often outshines vSphere and Hyper-V. Because KVM hypervisor is integrated in the Linux kernel, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (REV) Sometimes delivers superior cost, security, and performance compared with other virtualization platforms. However, to fully use the powerful functions of Rev, you must understand its architecture.
Rev Manager, also known as the RHEV-M Management Console, is the core component of the Red Hat server virtualization platform. Rev Manager provides a Web interface for managing virtual machines running on physical nodes.
Another important part of the rev environment is the host node that runs the virtual machine. You can configure RHEV-H hypervisor or Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers with virtualization authorization as nodes. The two types of nodes use KVM as the underlying hypervisor.
RHEV-H hypervisor is the default option for setting rev nodes, a bare-metal hypervisor that contains only a subset of the RHEL code running the virtual machine. Because of this, maintenance of the RHEV-H host is easier. In addition, these hosts require less patches and maintenance to ensure their security.
The RHEV-H base file system is only over 100 MB and runs in memory, which avoids changes to the base image. When the host is changed, this configuration also reduces the possibility of human errors.
Similarly, in addition to virtual machines and hypervisor management traffic, dedicated security-enhanced Linux policies and firewalls block all traffic and ensure the security of RHEV-H nodes.
In addition to the RHEV-H node, rev Manager also supports RHEL hosts running KVM. This feature makes it easier to deploy Rev in an existing RHEL environment.
Importance of VDSM in Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization
The RHEV-M Management Console uses the virtual desktop Server Manager (VDSM) to collect information about interactions between nodes. VDSM is a management proxy located on a node. It facilitates communication between the management console and the host. VDSM also allows RHEV-M to manage virtual machines and storage and collect performance statistics on hosts and clients.
However, when libvirt is active, VDSM cannot run. Libvirt is a class library used to manage the RHEL virtual environment. Therefore, if you are planning rev implementation, make sure that libvirt is invalid on all nodes managed by Rev. Otherwise, libvirt and VDSM cannot run normally.
Rev central repository
Another important component of rev infrastructure is the central repository, which consists of two main parts:
Data storage domain, which is used to store Virtual Machine images, templates, and snapshots.
ISO storage domain, which stores the ISO files required for Virtual Machine installation.
Rev has no specific storage requirements.
After the RHEV-M is installed and the virtual host is configured, all configurations are complete. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization includes all the advanced features of the virtual environment, including high availability, load balancing, and online migration.
