When deploying IBM Rational Insight performance management software in a large enterprise, you need to consider performance requirements for running data-intensive reports for multiple heterogeneous data sources. The key is to strategically distribute components on different machines to make full use of the division of labor and specialization of available computing resources.

This article describes some available flexible options and guides you to install Rational Insight V1.0.1.1 in an enterprise-level Scalable Distributed topology using IBM DB2 and IBM WebSphere Application Server.

IBM®Rational®Insight performance management software helps decision makers better monitor software development projects that are critical to their organization, so as to better manage projects. It provides development intelligence from the combination of information sources to achieve this. It also provides flexible options for large enterprises to deploy Rational Insight, which need to run information-intensive reports with a large volume of aggregated data. This article will guide you through®DB2®V9.7 and IBM®WebSphere®Key steps for installing Rational Insight V1.0.1.1 in an enterprise-level extensible topology of Application Server 7.0.

Considerations for enterprise deployment architecture

Regardless of the size of your enterprise, Rational Insight users in your organization must be able to quickly run and respond to reports and dashboards.

Typical usage considerations

To meet their needs, be sure to consider the following in your deployment plan:

  • The average (and maximum) number of concurrent users that you expect to use Rational Insight. Consider any expected growth rate in your user community.
  • The amount of data required in a typical report.
  • The diversity and heterogeneity of data sources from which user reports extract information.

Component Installation Considerations

Rational Insight provides options for installing and deploying multiple components in a distributed topology. In this way, architects or engineers can take full advantage of the division of labor and specialization of available computing resources to deal with these considerations.

You can deploy three components on different machines:

  1. Data (including data warehouse and content storage database)
  2. Extract, transform, and load (ETL) servers
  3. Reporting Server

Consider the following factors when deciding how to install these components:

  • If you expect your organization to store a large amount of data for the report, measure the option of installing a data server on a separate machine.
  • If you want to extract a large amount of data from multiple storage for frequently scheduled jobs and requests, consider deploying an ETL server on a dedicated machine.
  • Finally, if you think there will be a large number of concurrent users sending report requests, install the report server on a separate machine.

This article assumes that all three of these conditions are factors to consider, so you need to install all three components on different machines.

End user report authors can install some Rational Insight client software packages on their desktops to design, generate, and schedule reports. (Note: This document does not provide detailed installation steps for client software packages that implement the Rational Insight report production function .)

Figure 1. Enterprise Rational Insight deployment Topology

Figure 1 outlines the overall enterprise deployment topology that you will create. Each key Rational Insight component uses a separate physical machine: Data Server, ETL server, and Report Server.

You can learn several important things from figure 1:

  • Each computer in this architecture uses a 64-bit operating system. However, Rational Insight v1.0.1.1 can only run in 32-Bit mode. All the prerequisites for Rational Insight (such as DB2 and WebSphere Application Server) require the installation of a 32-bit version.
  • A permanent License is required for the Reporting server. This License is installed in IBM Rational License Key server v8.1.1 (or later) and needs to be accessed from this server. You can install the Rational License Key server on a machine far away from the Rational Insight server, as shown in 1. We will not further discuss how to install and use the licenses required by Rational Insight.
