It was reported that hackers targeted the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics to steal passwords or financial information.
According to foreign media, researchers said hackers have begun targeting the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics by using emails infected with malware to steal passwords or financial information.
According to a report reported by AFP on August 18, McAfee Cyber Security said in a report that several organizations related to the Winter Olympics have received malicious emails, its main goal is some ice hockey-related groups. "Most of these organizations have some relationship with the Winter Olympics. They are either providing infrastructure or playing an auxiliary role. The attacker seems to have pulled the Internet a lot in this attack ."
According to reports, as early as December 22 last year, the attack began, and the email adopted "fake name", which appeared to have originated from South Korea's national anti-terrorism center because the center was conducting a counter-terrorism drill, to prepare for the Winter Olympics.
McAfee said the emails actually come from a website in Singapore and instruct readers to open a Korean text file. According to the report, the document is titled "jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics".
In some cases, malware is hidden in the text and then displayed in an image-a technique called "implicit writing ". McAfee said: "according to our analysis, this implant method establishes an encrypted channel to the attacker's server, which is likely to allow the attacker to execute commands on the victim's computer, install additional malware."
McAfee said: "As the Winter Olympics is coming soon, we expect that the use of network attacks on topics related to the Winter Olympics will increase ."
