More than 500 government departments in Germany give up Microsoft's switch to Linux
Computer World Network According to the Associated Press, a senior German government official said more than 500 government departments have applied to join the German government's software cooperation program with International Business Machines (IBM) to promote the use of open source software and reduce reliance on Microsoft software.
A German Interior Ministry spokesman said the German federal antitrust agency has asked the Munich government to switch to open source operating systems, such as a free Linux platform. The German federal government signed an agreement with IBM last June to promote the use of open source software.
Earlier this year, a provincial capital of Germany decided that all government computers had to use OSS, a source of widespread media attention.
However, an Interior Ministry spokesman said the aim was not to replace Microsoft's Windows but to supplement it.
"We do not want to adopt a one-size-fits-all approach to software vendors and open source, and we want to take advantage of both to improve efficiency in government administration," he said. ”
According to last year's agreement, IBM offered discounts to government departments using Linux computers, and the agreement began only in the Home Office.
Unlike most business software, open source software is free, and the programmer responsible for the source code is constantly improving it. Because of this, Linux is more secure and reliable than Microsoft software.
The German Parliament has adopted Linux, and other international agencies include the U.S. Department of Energy, China Post, the French Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Education.
