New technologies help you solve problems with high WiFi costs

Are you still worried about your WiFi? Don't worry. Recently, a team of computer scientists and electrical engineers from the University of Washington has developed a very efficient Wi-Fi wireless network technology.

What are the main features of new configurations?

Researchers at the University of Washington who participated in the development of this technology have demonstrated that weak radio signals can indeed meet the power needs of an Internet device and consume 1‰ of the power of an existing Wi-Fi device component, this technology can more effectively promote WiFi devices. At present, the team that studies the technology has published some technical information (see below ). The team studying the technology plans to attend the network System Design and Implementation seminar in March to announce the results (USENIX Symposium on Networked System Design and Implementation ). Generally, more than 20 papers are hired at each session, with a recording rate of around 25%, indicating that NSDI has a very high quality of contribution.

PassiveWi-Fi (passiveWi-Fi) can be understood literally as passive in some functions. This new wireless device can use peripheral radio signals to power itself and communicate with each other. Meanwhile, passive Wi-Fi signals are scattered to the backend, connect a batterless device to a traditional device, and the device costs less than $1. Vamsi Talla, a researcher participating in the project, said:

"All components and power consumption components required by the network are assembled into an plug-in device, which will reflect the generated Wi-Fi data packets in real time ."

The concept of the device is similar to that of the radio frequency identification (RFID) chip, and is similar to that of the retroreflector bugs (the former Soviet Union eavesdropping on the listening equipment of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, backward scattering communication is used.

This technology is well received

A research team at Stanford University last year released a similar technology called backfi, which uses existing Wi-Fi network signals to generate reflection signals, and at the same time can be 5 Mbps (Mbps/second) speed to transmit signals back and forth. Currently, Passive Wi-Fi is compatible with normal Wi-Fi devices. It can also be used as a separate base station, that is, 1‰ of the power consumption of some small connection devices that use Bluetooth LE and ZigBee communication standards. During the entire experiment, the data processing capability can reach 11 Gb/s per second (Mbps), and the transmission distance is about 100 feet.

Currently, this technology was rated by MIT as one of the top 10 breakthrough technologies in 2016. In addition to power-saving and increasing service life, it can also help some wearable devices and some home devices without worrying about power supply problems when using WiFi.
