Nine things to do after Ubuntu 15.10 is installed
When Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf is downloaded and installed, it will not be easy to use. If you want to use it well, you have to make many modifications to meet your usage habits, this article introduces some configuration items that I have made after installing Ubuntu 15.10.
1. Understand New Features
Although Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf is not a revolutionary feature update version, it still brings a lot of functional features and user experience improvements. The new features of Ubuntu 15.10 have been introduced in previous articles, I will not go into details here.
2. Update the system
Although it is the latest Ubuntu 15.10 version, some system updates and software updates are required after installation. This is not surprising in the Linux World. We can click Install now in the Software Updater to update the software.
3. Install the Linux graphics card driver
To achieve better display performance of Ubuntu, you must install the compatible graphics card driver so that the Ubuntu Desktop can run smoothly, after installing the Linux graphics card driver, you can also get the best frame rate in Game and multimedia applications.
Ubuntu currently supports open-source drivers for most graphics hardware. To install drivers for Ubuntu 15.10, you can install them in software and update-additional drivers.
4. Install the media codecs
Due to legal restrictions, Ubuntu cannot directly integrate MP3 and other popular media codecs for users to use them out of the box. However, this problem is well solved, we can search for Ubuntu restricted extras in the Ubuntu Software Center for installation.
5. Adjust the menu
When we open an application or window in Ubuntu 15.10, the menu (several seconds) will be displayed on the top by default, and then automatically hidden, when we move the mouse focus to the top bar, the menu will appear again. This function can save the display space and reduce the interference to user operations.
If you do not like this function, you can adjust it to the title bar of the window in system settings-appearance-, and adjust the menu bar to the display of the application window instead of the top bar.
6. Handle Flash Problems
Although Flash has been abandoned on the Internet, some websites still need to use Flash. However, Adobe announced the suspension of Flash Support for Linux a few years ago, and many browsers have announced that they will abandon the NPAPI architecture.
Currently, we recommend that you use the Google Chrome browser because the latest version can handle Flash plug-ins well.
7. change to a nice skin
The default themes of Ubuntu have not changed much in the past few years, which makes Ubuntu display monotonous. Therefore, changing the theme after installing Ubuntu 15.10 is also recommended.
If you only want to change the Ubuntu 15.10 desktop background, go to system settings-appearance to make changes.
8. Privacy Management
When we search for a file in Unity Dash, there will always be data related to the application, online results, and important files. If you do not want data that contains personal information to appear in the search results, you can disable it.
Choose "system settings"> "Security and Privacy"> "file and application selection"> "close" and remove the Data Type displayed in the search result to be banned. If you do not want to display online search results in Unity Dash, you only need to disable online search results on the Search tab.
9. Install the required applications
Although Ubuntu 15.10 has built-in well-known LibreOffice and Firefox applications for us, these applications may not be your favorite and common. The Ubuntu Software Center provides us with a large number of free applications, including:
◆ Steam-game distribution platform
◆ GIMP-easy-to-use image editor
◆ VLC-media players that are very popular internationally
◆ Geary-desktop email client
◆ Chromium-open source Web browser from Google
◆ Skype-I don't need to introduce this
Of course, I personally recommend the following software (not included in the Ubuntu Software Center ):
◆ Google Chrome-no need to introduce this
◆ Spotify for Linux-popular streaming media music service in Linux
◆ Corebird-Linux Desktop Twitter Client
◆ Lightwork-industry NLE Video Editor
◆ Viber-Skype alternative solution
◆ Vivaldi-Web browser for developers
