RedHat and Mandrake are the most common Release versions of Linuxer in China. the reason for the popularity of these two systems is simple: easy to use, mature and stable. here I will introduce you to another excellent Linux operating system, suse linux from Germany. suse linux has little knowledge in China, but fewer users. it is difficult to find the relevant literature. I hope this article will help you learn more about SuSE Linux's advantages and disadvantages and other features. Welcome to Linuxbyte.net to discuss SuSE with me. this article is very basic and has no technical knowledge. suitable for beginners of all levels.

1. A Brief History of SuSE Linux

S. u. s.E: "Software und System Entwicklung ". in English: "Software and System Development ". software and system development is the most straightforward name among many Linux releases.

SuSE can be traced back to 10 years ago, that is, 1993. founded by four Germans and owned SuSE companies so far: Hubert Mantel, Burchard Steinbild, Roland Dyroff and Thomas Fehr. early SuSE companies did not develop their own operating systems, but used Slackware (a Linux operating system known for its stability) all scripts and comments are translated into German and installed in 40 floppy disks. later, CD was used as the loading media release.

Finally, the Germans decided to develop their own operating systems instead of fixing the Slackware bugs. we also hope to improve the operational performance of Slackware and add better installation and configuration tools. they transplanted a primary operating system from Florian LaRoche and improved it, resulting in the birth of SuSE's first Linux operating system: suSE Linux4.2. at the same time, SuSE also developed a famous system installation and configuration tool: YaST.

In early 1997, SuSE started its first North American company in Auckland, California, and thus entered the world's Linux system market.

3. Install SuSE Linux 9.0 Professional Edition

The installation of SuSE Linux 9.0 is very simple. With the help of SuSE's powerful installation and configuration tool YaST, the next step is basically enough. here is a brief introduction to YaST. yaST is called "Yet another Setup Tool? The name is also very direct, maybe it is related to the pragmatic and direct character of the German people, right? : D)

The structure of the control panel in YaST and Windows is very similar. novice users can easily find all system configurations, hardware configurations, and network configurations. basically, all system management projects can be found here. each configuration item has a friendly user interface, which is very convenient to use. it also supports text interfaces to ensure YaST usage when video card problems occur. however, YaST has a flaw, which I will mention in the following article.

After loading SuSE Linux CD1, you will see that the YaST of the graphic interface has been started and the current system information is automatically searched. select the language and simplified Chinese. after initialization, the system lists your hardware information and hard disk partition information. click "modify" to change the following items:

-Mode: Select "new installation" or "upgrade installation ".

-Keyboard layout: American keyboards are used in China.

-Mouse: select the mouse setting closest to you (no USB scroll wheel is available, which is also a disadvantage of SuSE hardware support)

-Partition: partition according to your preferences. If you do not partition, you can leave space for SuSE installation in windows, and leave the remaining space for SuSE installation. suSE9 supports NTFS format, so files in your windows system can also be accessed.

-Software: Add/delete related software packages. If you are familiar with GNOME, adjust the "software" option. The default desktop system of SuSE is KDE. GNOME is not included in the default installation,

-Start: Modify the start mode, select the default start system (SuSE or another operating system), and select boot loader.

-Time: The time is set to your time zone. Here is: Shanghai.

-Language: Simplified Chinese

-Reset to the default setting: discard all the above changes and return to the initial setting value of the system.

During this installation, my video card and monitor were not correctly identified. The GeforceFX5600 I used was not found in the driver list, but there was an FX5600SE, I was forced to use the driver (not in favor of doing so ). my display is IBM G78, and the driver list does not exist. The default display is used. when the video card is updated automatically, a new driver module is loaded from the SuSE FTP website to solve the problem. the display is a Linux driver that I have installed on myself. on the other machine with the installation of ATI 9600, there was no hardware problem and the installation was successful. it is worth mentioning that my onboard via8233 sound card cannot be identified in RedHat, but it is successfully recognized in SuSE. TV cards that cannot be identified under redHat and Mandrake are also installed successfully and can be used without modifying any configuration files. in general, SuSE is doing a good job in computer hardware support, saving a lot of unnecessary troubles. It is especially important for valuable beginners to be enthusiastic about Linux.

On linuxquestions.org, we can see that the hardware support for SuSE old models is poor. here again, SuSE 9.0 does not support CPU of version 486 or earlier (neither does Cyrix ). I think this operating system is not suitable for lightweight Linuxer-there are too many additional things and a large memory is required. I didn't install server plug-ins and modules, and I also used 3 GB.

I have no practice on installing and using SuSE on a notebook. however, I have read two SuSE user manuals, including the detailed installation and usage methods in the notebook system. including installation and configuration through PCMCIA (using cardctl kit), advanced power management and configuration methods (energy-saving functions, sleep functions, etc ). you can also configure and use the infrared interface and wireless network card. presumably, SuSE won't be disappointed with the hardware support of the notebook. which of the following experts has such experiences.

4. SuSE Linux 9.0 Professional Edition

The SuSE Linux 9.0 interface is simple and clear, and looks very fresh (the key is fresh, and it won't feel like it in a few days ). the Default Login Desktop System For SuSE is KDE. I am used to using it in the GNOME environment, so I changed it to the desktop under GNOME. after modifying the system language to Chinese in the YaST control center, you can find that YaST mentioned above has a flaw: the entire system has excellent culture in both context and context, no matter the menu or browser, except YaST itself! It is hard to understand. The Chinese characters in the YaST system are incomplete, and there is basically no way to read them. It is really a big failure of SuSE. In addition, YaST can be said to be a very good tool.

SuSE also has a built-in Chinese Input Method platform SCIM. however, when SCIM is configured under YaST, it is found that this software conflicts with the SuSE system. I don't know whether it is a common problem on my machine or not, so I need to know more about it. which of the following informed friends can tell me. the method for detecting a conflict is simple. You only need to search for the word SCIM under the Add/delete software project of YaST to see the system conflict warning. another problem with SCIM is the input method defect. SCIM comes with an internal code input method. To be honest, I won't use it. I am a pinyin expert. germans seem to have little knowledge about China's national conditions, and there are not many users of internal code. in desperation, you can only delete SCIM installed with little penguin input method.

About Gaim. suSE is the same as many release versions, and does not support installing the MSN protocol. there are also many solutions. The dumbest way is to download a Gaim specially packaged for SuSE. (If you cannot find it, come to me ). it can be used after installation. in addition to Gaim, SuSE also comes with Gabber and Kopete, which I think is not as useful as Gaim.

In addition to Chinese characters, SuSE performs well and the system speed is fast and stable. other aspects are comparable to RedHat and Mandrake, and they are easy to use. however, configuration files may not be found when installing software, even though you have installed related modules or software packages. that's because SuSE uses the FHS Standard (File System Hierarchy Standard ). you must modify the directory of some configuration files to install the files correctly.

Summary

SuSE 9.0 Professional is always a very good operating system. although we still need configuration in many places, we are more mature than the previous SuSE products in terms of hardware support and software support, inheriting the stability and compatibility of the previous SuSE products, the current mainstream hardware and software can run smoothly in SuSE. the Chinese culture is comparable to RedHat and Mandrake. if you are interested, try it. welcome to the linuxbyte.net Forum (Click here to go to the forum for discussion) to discuss more SuSE experiences with SuSE users.
