Recoll is a text search tool for Unix and Linux desktops. Recoll can search for file names and keywords in files.
Recoll can do the following for you.
- It can search for files in any format.
- Wildcard characters are supported.
- Search by file author, type, size, format, and other conditions
- You can search for files stored in any location, such as files, archive files, and email attachments.
- Supports desktop and website integration
- Provides Firefox plug-ins to index the history of web pages
- Click the search result to open or display the text preview in the local editor.
- It is free open-source and released with the GPL license.
Install Recoll on Ubuntu/Linux Mint
Recoll can be found in the Ubuntu repository. However, it is better to add the repository of Recoll to install the latest version.
Run the following command to add a Recoll Repository:
sudo add-apt-repository
Run the following command to update the software list:
sudo apt-get update
Now you can use the following command to install Recoll.
sudo apt-get install recoll
For other releases, you can download the source code on the download page and compile and install it.
Start Recoll
Recoll can be started from Dash or menu.
During the first startup, You need to index the entire home directory. The time required varies depending on the number of items stored in your home directory. Press Start indexing now to Start the index.
If you want more custom indexes, you can adjust the index configuration and Index Plan. To do this, you only need to click the Indexing configuration or Indexing schedule link. If you want to configure it later, you can configure these options in the Preferences menu.
Once the index is complete, you can search for files/folders. The results are displayed based on relevance and a small part of the matching content is displayed.
