After acquiring Qumranet, the author of KVM, RedHat owns the original virtualization technology of Qumranet and uses KVM as its own virtualization strategy. in the x86_64 architecture, RHEL5.4 also includes KVM supporting SPICE protocol, greatly improving the desktop user experience. supported operating systems include RHEL4, RHEL5, MS Win XP, MS Win 2003, MS Win 2008, etc. it also provides a semi-virtualization driver for disks and networks of MS Win 2003 and MS Win 2008. Using a semi-virtualization driver can greatly reduce the cpu utilization of Host and guest and improve system efficiency. MS Win Xp only provides network-semi-virtualization drivers.
EXT4 and xXFS file systems are also included in the technical preview of RHEL5.4.
The SPICE protocol was originally used by Qumranet's main product, SolidICE, to provide the same user experience as the real PC, including superior graphics performance and two-way sound/graphics. this link (http://www.qumranet.com/products-and-solutions) is still some information provided by Qumranet. this link (http://www.qumranet.com/products-and-solutions/video-library) provides some SPICE/SolidICE videos.
