Spring for Skype users: IP addresses can be renewed at last
Skype announced in an official blog this week that they can now hide users' IP addresses and protect users from cyberattacks. In the latest version of Skype, this new security feature is enabled by default.
Online IP Address Resolution resolvers
Before that, if you know the target Skype account name, it is very easy to obtain its IP address. There are many websites on the Internet that provide such services (resolvers) for you to resolve the target IP address.
In 2013, Brian Krebs wrote a blog post about:
"We made this decision because many services on the Internet used this vulnerability over the past year to help malicious and idle people track and harass our users. For example, a website called skype resolver will return the result (reliability cannot be guaranteed) after you search for the account name of a skype user to help you find the IP address of the skype user."
New version of Skype
According to official Skype, this new security feature aims to protect online players. When people compete in online games or match matches, someone may be in a hurry and launch a DDOS attack to bring their opponents offline.
So from now on, if you use Skype and want to hide your IP address, upgrade it as soon as possible.
