SQL Server 1069: the service cannot be started due to logon failure.

 

When Microsoft SQL Server or SQL Server Agent is restarted, the Service may fail to be started and the following error message is displayed:

Error 1069: the service cannot be started due to logon failure.

Cause

This problem occurs because the password of the SQL Server or SQL Server Agent service account is incorrect. This problem occurs if the account password is changed but the password information of SQL Server or SQL Server Agent is not updated.

Alternative Method

To solve this problem, enter the correct password in the Microsoft SQL Server Service Account of the SQL server host.

To correct this password on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Microsoft Windows XP, follow these steps:

1.	Click Start, point to settings, and then click Control Panel.
2.	Double-click the management tool and double-click the service.
3.	Perform one of the following steps based on your instance type: • For default instances of SQL Server, double-click "MSSQLServer" and click the "Log on" tab. • For SQL server named instances, double-click "MSSQL $YourinstancenameAnd then click the logon tab. SetYourinstancenameReplace it with the actual name of the SQL server instance. • For default instances of SQL Server Agent, double-click "SQLAgent" and click the "Logon" tab. • For a named instance of SQL Server Agent, double-click "SQLAgent $YourinstancenameAnd then click the logon tab. SetYourinstancenameReplace it with the actual name of the SQL server instance.
4.	In the password and Confirm Password text box, type the correct password and click OK.

To correct the password in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, follow these steps:

1.	Click Start, point to settings, and then click Control Panel.
2.	Perform one of the following steps based on your instance type: • For default instances of SQL Server, double-click "MSSQLServer" and click the "Log on" tab. • For SQL server named instances, double-click "MSSQL $YourinstancenameAnd then click the logon tab. SetYourinstancenameReplace it with the actual name of the SQL server instance. • For default instances of SQL Server Agent, double-click "SQLAgent" and click the "Logon" tab. • For a named instance of SQL Server Agent, double-click "SQLAgent $YourinstancenameAnd then click the logon tab. SetYourinstancenameReplace it with the actual name of the SQL server instance.
3.	In the password and Confirm Password text box, type the correct password and click OK.

Note: You can use the Services applet to change the password so that SQL Server can be restarted successfully. However, if Microsoft Search (full-text search service) is installed, SQL Enterprise Manager (SEM) is required) make subsequent password changes.

By using SEM, right-click the server, click Properties, and then click the Security tab. Enter the corresponding account and password under the startup service account.
