A. Problem

1. What is Linux?

Basically, Linux is a UNIX-like, core-module-based, fully memory-protected, multitasking operating system. It was originally developed by Linus Torvalds at Helsinki University in 1991, it is also issued under the GNU General Public License.

2. Can I run Linux on my computer?

The best thing about Linux is that it can be executed on any basic computer hardware.

3. Does Linux support my interface devices?

Maybe yes, or no. Most common interface devices, such as modem, printer, and nic, can work well in Linux. However, some devices operate better than others, and some do not. The following describes some general principles of device compatibility.

Old ISA card: NE-2000 network adapter, old-style audio card (sound blster 16) and U. s. robotics Sportster can run normally in Linux. In fact, this is a great place in Linux: Old hardware that should have been thrown into the garbage can still be used.

PCI Card: Based on experience, ISA is more feasible than PCI in Linux-at least for the time being. For example, many PCI data machines are almost "Windows" Data machines (see the following description ), therefore, they cannot run in Linux. The latest PCI sound cards, such as Turtle Beach Mongo and sound blster live, are not yet supported by Linux (but developers are working hard to solve this problem ). Using the latest Linux core module helps you install the PCI Card. Many PCI Ethernet and scsicards are supported. For details, see the dealer's hardware support list.

5. How do I install Linux?

To make your work run smoothly, you 'd better first list a list of computer devices. Unlike windows, which can identify hardware and configure it on its own, Linux usually requires your assistance to write down the following points in case:

Manufacturer, model, and interface for CD-ROM disk drives

The manufacturer and model of the SCSI adapter (if any)

Mouse type

Drawing card manufacturers, models, and memory size

Display Screen manufacturers, models, and scan rates

All network information you know (IP address, network shield, communication address, DNS address, domain name, and network card type)

Linux may ask you this information during installation. If you don't know it, it will go crazy.

8. How can I run Linux in windows?

If you want to install Linux, but some people in the House have a special liking for Windows, you can install the two operating systems on the same computer. First, set a Dual Boot system so that you can choose to run Windows or Linux at boot.

B. Compatibility

Run Windows or Linux

You can split a new hard disk into DoS (Windows) and Linux, or use a public disk that does not damage the original data.ProgramSplit existing hard disks (for example, system Commander deluxe or partition commander of V Communications ). Next, install Linux in the LINUX partition and Set LILO (including Linux), or install another boot management program, so that you can choose to run Windows or Linux at boot.
