Sun's policy: Using Solaris as the basis for Linux

Sun officials announced the details of their open-source code policy on July 15, November 2. Sun publicly revealed the long-standing Conjecture of most industry vendors that Sun's top priority is to support its Solaris operating system, not the Linux operating system.
At a meeting prior to the release of Solaris 10, John, Senior Marketing Director of Sun's Network Systems Group, said the cost of Solaris 10 would be lower than that of Red Hat's Linux Solutions. He said, this does not mean that we are trying to grab the Linux limelight. We sell and support Red Hat Linux on our system, but we will do our best to provide the most attractive Solaris environment. Solaris is our top priority task. In the field where Solaris cannot meet customer needs, we provide and support Linux.
Sun also plans to release a new compatible technology named "Project Janus" that enables users to run Linux binary code on the Solaris operating system. At the operating system level, Janus serves as an optional kernel service for the Solaris operating system.
According to Sun's vice president of the operating system group, since many Linux binary codes depend on their specific runtime environments, we will first solve the problem of running Red Hat Linux binary code, then, we gradually support other versions of Linux. Although it is not possible to appear in the first version of Solaris 10, Janus will appear in the first version of Solaris 10. He said that we will first ensure the binary code compatibility between different versions of Solaris. At present, we are considering the binary code compatibility with Red Hat Linux.
Sun's President Jonathan said he believes that the open-source Solaris operating system will become a balance in the open-source operating system market, allows users and developers to compare Solaris with Red Hat Linux. Our licensing methods will be more flexible and generous. Jonathan said Sun's goal of introducing the open-source Solaris version is not to weaken Linux, but to ensure that "we can provide Red Hat competitors because Red Hat is not Linux, although it is a Linux company." Jonathan also pointed out that we have not decided on the license type of the open-source Solaris operating system, and the GPL licensing method has not been excluded. It has the same opportunity as other licensing methods.
Although Sun will open as many Solaris operating system source code as possible, Sun is unlikely to open all the code because it does not have all the intellectual property rights of the Solaris operating system. (Compiled by Liu Yanqing)
