This article includes all the reasons why the network Adapter could not establish the connection exception is not connected to SQL Server, and provides a graphical troubleshooting wizard.
However, according to experience, no upgrade to SP4 is the most likely. You can see the 6th part directly.

common errors are:The network Adapter could not establish the connection
1 Check whether SQL SERVER allows remote access.
Specific steps:
1 Open Enterprise Manager, open Console Root >sql Server Group > database
2 Right-click on the corresponding "Database" and select "Properties"

3 Select the Connection tab to check whether the RPC service is selected under Remote server connection.

2 using Telnet IP address 1433, does the system prompt for a connection error
Like Telnet 127.0.0.1 1433.
If a black screen appears, this port is normal
If the system prompts an error
Check to see if the firewall masks network access ports on SQL SERVER or the Java IDE
If it is, turn off the firewall, restart SQL Server and the Java IDE, and test,
If the system still prompts the above error, try the following steps
3 Check the SQL SERVER port number and whether the TCP/IP protocol is enabled
Specific steps:
1 Open Enterprise Manager, open Console Root >sql Server Group > database
2 Right-click on the corresponding "Database" and select "Properties"
3 Select the "General" tab, click "Network Configuration", such as No "TCP/IP protocol" in the enabled protocol to add it

4 Select "TCP/IP protocol" and click "Properties" to check if the port number is 1433

5 If the port number is 1433, modify it to another port number, modify the JDBC Connection statement, and change the port number to the newly enabled port number, such as jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://server_name:1400 (assuming the new port number is 1400)

4 of the following methods you try each kind of:
1 Check to see if SQL Server connection is full.

2 If it is a question of authentication.
You can specify server-> content-> security to the SQL Enterprice manager->. change validation to SQL Server and Windows.

3 Click on the property to check whether the port is correct.
4) Executive%mssql_home%80toolsbinnsvrnetcn.exe
Enable the TCP/IP.
5) Turn off the firewall.

6 Update SQL Server to SP4:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=zh-cn&FamilyID= 8e2dfc8d-c20e-4446-99a9-b7f0213f8bc5
After my verification, general upgrade to the SP4 will be easy to use!
Note that the upgrade method, not double-click to run on it, this SP4 is decompression program, you want to specify a directory, recommend C:, decompression, you need to go to that directory running inside the Setup.bat is the real installation. I don't know why Microsoft doesn't call that directly. I don't understand!!!.

The inspection method is as follows:

Execute the following SQL statement

Print   @ @version

If it is SP4, the following version number should appear

Microsoft SQL Server 2000-8.00.2039 (Intel X86)
May 3 2005 23:18:38
Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation

Please note that the 8.00.2039

Other versions of the information are compared to the following

SQL Server 2000 version and level @ @VERSION Product level
SQL Server 2000 Original version 8.00.194 Rtm
Database Components SP1 8.00.384 SP1
Database Components SP2 8.00.534 Tpu
Database Components SP3, SP3a 8.00.760 SP3
MSDE Release A 8.00.760 SP3
Database Components SP4 8.00.2039 SP4

7 Finally, please be sure to pay attention to the difference between JDBC2.0 and 3.0 http://www.java2000.net/viewthread.jsp?tid=367

8 in SQL Server 2005, if there are
The TCP/IP connection to the host failed. Java.net.ConnectException:Connection Refused:connect
sqlserver2005 TCP/IP connections are disabled by default. How to start a TCP/IP connection,
Open the SQL Server Configuration Manager under the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Configuration Tool directory, select the MSSQLSERVER protocol,
Then the right window has a TCP/IP protocol, then starts it, stops the SQL Server service, and then starts. The problem is solved.

Good luck to all of you.
