To share a wireless network for Internet access, we often need to use a Wireless AP to build a wireless LAN, and then the client workstation can share the Internet through the wireless LAN; however, in some special work places or work environments, we sometimes have no Wireless AP at hand. In this case, is there no way for us to enjoy wireless Internet sharing? In fact, a simple wireless network can be built between several laptops installed with wireless NICs without the need for Wireless AP connection. Then, a laptop is set as a proxy server, then, other laptops will naturally be able to share Internet content over wireless networks.

Thoughts on wireless Internet sharing

By default, we can easily connect to the wireless LAN after we enable the wireless cidrds function in the laptop or directly Insert the wireless Nic device into the laptop, however, this automatic wireless connection function requires AP devices to transmit wireless signals to provide wireless network access services. In fact, there are no Wireless AP devices available in some special workplaces. What should we do? If we have two laptops installed with wireless network adapters, we can access the wireless network, but we need to modify the default working mode of the wireless network adapter, in order to achieve point-to-point wireless network connection.

We know that wireless network card devices usually have two working modes: AP working mode and point-to-point working mode. AP working mode is the normal working mode of wireless network, this mode requires all wireless workstations to be connected to the Wireless AP device to work. The Wireless AP device is the most important network device in the wireless LAN. If the network device is damaged, then the entire Wireless LAN network will be paralyzed automatically. A point-to-point network is a wireless network without a core and can be freely combined. It does not need to be attached to any fixed network device for work, therefore, we can use this working mode to build a flexible temporary wireless network. In a point-to-point transmission network environment, any client workstation exists as an independent body. Any failure or unexpected shutdown of a common workstation will not affect the stability of the entire wireless network.

Obviously, without Wireless AP devices, we can use point-to-point wireless working mode to build a cheap temporary Wireless LAN. Once a wireless LAN is available, in this case, we only need to install the proxy server software in one of the laptops so that it becomes a LAN proxy server, so that other laptops can share the Internet through the proxy server.

Build point-to-point Wireless Networks

This document uses two laptops as an example to describe how to set up a point-to-point wireless network. Assume that one laptop is a and the other is B. Now we can set the working mode of the wireless Nic device as follows:

First, install the wireless network card device to computer a correctly. Then, the computer automatically runs the built-in wireless signal search program, because the wireless Nic device works in AP mode by default, if there is a wireless router or Wireless AP around the laptop, this signal search program can search for wireless Internet access signals sent from Wireless AP devices, so that computer A can easily access the specified Wireless LAN in AP working mode; because there is no Wireless AP device near computer A, the wireless signal search program in the computer cannot find the wireless network, and a prompt is displayed;

Click Start, set, and network connection commands. In the displayed local network connection List window, find the network connection icon corresponding to the wireless network card device, right-click the network connection icon and execute the "properties" command from the shortcut menu to open the attribute setting window for the target wireless network connection;

In Windows, the "any available network" option is automatically selected by default. However, this option requires support from Wireless AP devices. If we do not have support from Wireless AP devices, you cannot select this option. Similarly, the "Access Point (structure) network only" option also requires the wireless Nic device to work in the Wireless AP mode. Therefore, we must select the "computer-to-computer (specific)" option here to ensure that computer A and computer B can form a point-to-point wireless transmission network.

To enable computer A to automatically establish a wireless network connection with computer B, we also need to create an ADHOC Network in computer B, we try to use a random management program for wireless Nic equipment, because Windows does not have built-in functional components. Now we take Cisco's Linksys management tool as an example, to introduce the steps for creating an ADHOC Network:

Because we are building a point-to-point wireless transmission network here, it does not exist in this wireless LAN and does not require DHCP servers, therefore, we should select the "specify Network Settings" option on the interface, and then manually configure the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS, and other parameters for the corresponding wireless network card device;

After completing the preceding settings, click "Next". In the subsequent interface, we need to modify the working mode of the wireless Nic device. As mentioned above, the wireless network card device uses the AP working mode by default, but we need to establish a point-to-point wireless transmission network here. Therefore, we need to select "Ad-Hoc mode ", at the same time, set a suitable SSID name for the newly created wireless network. Assume that the name of the network is "LAN". Note that, the SSID name of the wireless network will be shared by another laptop, and the name is case sensitive;

Click "Next". In the subsequent interface, we need to set the working status of Ad-Hoc mode. The specific content to be set includes the network mode and standard channel parameters; if we use the hybrid mode, the Wireless-N, Wireless-B, and Wireless-G devices can work in the same working subnet; if we set the network mode parameter to "Wireless-G only", the Wireless LAN will not be able to run the Wireless-G device. If there is no special requirement here, we should set the network mode to "mixed mode". When setting standard channel parameters, we must ensure that the selected channel Parameters match those of other devices in the LAN, if we do not know how many channel parameters should be selected, we can select the "Automatic" option;

When the wizard window prompts us to set the security parameters of the wireless network, we can ignore this step. After all, this type of LAN contains a small number of workstations, and this type of network is only for temporary use, therefore, it has relatively low requirements on Network Transmission Security. After confirming that all the above parameters are set correctly, click "save" in the Wizard window to save the above parameter settings.

Once the above settings are completed, computer B will automatically search for wireless Nic devices that are also active in Ad-Hoc mode, since we have previously set the wireless network card device of computer A to the Ad-Hoc mode, computer B will soon find computer A and establish an ADHOC network connection with it, in this way, computer A and computer B form a simple wireless LAN.

Wireless Internet sharing

Once a simple wireless LAN network is built, two laptops, A and B, can be shared with each other. However, before Internet sharing, we need to install proxy software in a laptop that can access the Internet directly to shake the computer into a LAN proxy server. Then, in another laptop, set the gateway address to the IP address of the LAN proxy server, in this way, another laptop can access the proxy server through a point-to-point wireless network and share Internet access through the proxy server.
