1. Create backup policies
The establishment of backup policies is an extremely important part of the entire backup system. A good backup policy can fully enjoy the benefits of TSM: fully automated, meeting backup requirements, and secure backup.
The creation of backup policies is closely related to the backup technology provided by TSM. TSM supports full backup and unique "permanent Incremental Backup. Permanent Incremental Backup refers to the full backup of all data files at the initial stage. In the future, only new or modified files will be backed up. This method reduces the backup time and the required storage capacity, and reduces the network burden. In this way, TSM treats each backup object as a transaction and records it in its relational database. Each backup object corresponds to a file in the file system. When the user needs to restore the file system, TSM finds all the original backup objects belonging to the file system and submits them to the user. Therefore, TSM can perform Incremental Backup forever.
In TSM, the creation of a backup policy allows the client to be backed up to share, or multiple backup policies can be created in a backup center to meet the needs of different data backups. Tivoli uses the domain mode for management. You can create backup policies for the backup and archive of each domain, including:
1) Number of versions retained
2) Number of days each version is retained
3) Retention days of expired versions
4) media data concentration threshold
To a large extent, the formulation of backup policies must adapt to the customer's actual backup requirements. The following describes a simple backup policy based on Tivoli's permanent Incremental Backup Technology:
1) adopt a full backup policy on Friday to retain a complete copy of data.
2) Incremental backup is used from Monday to Thursday, and Incremental backup is used to change and generate all new files in the backup system compared with the full backup on Friday.
3) When a recovery request occurs on Monday, you only need to restore all the data backed up on last Friday from the tape library.
4) When a recovery request is required from Tuesday to Friday, you only need to restore all the data backed up last Friday with the incremental data backed up the previous day.
5) when you want to restore files that have been deleted by mistake, the system will find the backup time versions of the deleted files based on the file index, this helps the user to recover from the backup media on the previous day after confirmation.
When more than one full backup system is required, the above policies can be implemented in turn. For example, on Friday, the full backup of system A is selected, and on other systems, the Incremental backup of relatively full backup is selected, perform full backup for system B on Monday and Incremental backup for other systems. And so on.
The specific actual backup policy needs to be formulated based on the user's actual management environment and management requirements during implementation.
2. Utilization of storage media
In the daily backup process, the storage media-tape is the largest consumable, especially most customers often find that they need a lot of tape, but it seems that the utilization of the tape is very low. TSM provides a large number of media management capabilities to ensure the effective use of this aspect.
TSM manages backup and archive data separately. Because the archive data is stored longer than the backup data, and the backup data has a 'version', the archive data has no version. The 'version' is multiple copies of the same data object. For example, files that record the sales status are changed every day. If you back up data every day, the daily backup is a 'version '. You can retain the required 'versions' based on your actual business needs. TSM can automatically clear expired backup versions and archive data.
TSM uses unique tape concentration and tape reuse technologies in media management. The tape set enables each client to store the daily backup data on one or more tapes, enabling TSM to recover with the minimum number of tapes. This is a fast and reliable data recovery method.
The purpose of "tape reuse" is to enable automatic rotation of tape libraries or optical library media, so that backup and recovery are completely unattended. The principle is: when more and more expired data on the media reaches a certain limit, for example, 80% of the data on the media has expired, TSM automatically integrates the residual data of several such media into one media, while other media enters the new media rotation. Therefore, if the user has enough storage capacity, TSM can achieve real 'zero management '.
TSM can automatically track the whereabouts and usage of all media. TSM not only automatically manages the media in the tape library and optical inventory library, but also tracks the media stored outside the tape library and optical inventory Library and the backup media stored in a remote location. When the recovery requires these media, TSM will prompt the Administrator where to retrieve the media labeled as XXX.
3. Management of the Backup System
As an independent backup system, TSM can achieve unattended backup operations. Tivoli provides multiple management methods to effectively manage the operations of TSM:
1) TSM admin interface: TSM provides a graphical management interface that allows administrators of the city to conveniently manage the settings, operations, and performance optimization of the entire TSM system.
2) TSM Web Interface: TSM provides support for Web browsers. Management personnel can fully support TSM management functions through the built-in management capabilities of TSM.
3) TSM command line: You can use the command line to manage all the TSM servers.
4) TSM Enterprise Management: the enterprise management feature of TSM enables administrators to manage all the TSM servers in the enterprise without geographic restrictions.
5) Tivoli module for TSM: fully utilizes the integration of TSM and Tivoli Enterprise to complete real-time monitoring and remote operations on the TSM server. The built-in Monitor of Tivoli module for TSM can easily monitor important parts of TSM and detect exceptions in the backup process.
