Here we will introduce how to solve the problem and achieve the goal, instead of sticking to the construction and setup technologies. Because it saves the trouble of simple text-based construction, we should not expect too much of the functions of the file server. However, it should be okay for individuals in the family.

The file server mentioned here is known as Samba. Ubuntu is 11.10 Desktop.

The build method is very simple. After Ubuntu is installed (that is, Samba has not been installed), create a Folder (Folder) that you want to publish ). You can also use existing folders. On the gui (not in terminal), right-click the folder and select properties or sharing options. Set sharing options according to your requirements (if you right-click properties, set it in the share Tab ). At this time, a prompt indicating that the sharing service has not been installed is displayed in a timing instance. Click a few buttons as prompted to install Samba. Very easy!

After Samba is installed, go to root, open the folder to be published, and set share Options again (if this is just done as root, do not do this step ), then, press the "create share" button.

On other computers (my computer is Windows 7) "My network" should be able to see the name of the computer that built the file server (of course, other computers on the same local network ). Double-click the computer name and you will be asked to enter the user name and password. Enter the username and password (root username and password) set during Ubuntu installation, and the public folder will be displayed.

If the share is not set as root, the user name and password are also required after you double-click the computer. But I tried it several times and failed. I don't know what username and password should I enter. Some people will say that entering the username and password of the user who set share is not enough? However, I did not succeed. If you have better experience, please give us an introduction.

The file server built in the above method can only be accessed with a root user name. Therefore, it is easy to build. But it should be enough to use it within the family. Even in the company, the problem is not too big. If you want to create multiple user names and set different passwords and authorizations for each user name, some text-based settings are required. It is also set through the gui (Graphical User Interface. But I haven't found it in Ubuntu (it should be ). In the past, gui settings were used to build file servers in Fedora. If you are using a variety of servers, do not use the Ubuntu desktop version. I mainly use it as a common computer. By the way, I build a server, so I chose Ubuntu desktop.
