Ubuntu8.04 detailed description of General hard drive installation for each version (NTFS installation supported)

Ubuntu8.04 was released as early as April 24. Because my machine configuration is not very good, I chose the Xubuntu version. Xubuntu has much lower hardware requirements than Ubuntu. We recommend that users with low machine configuration use Xubuntu, but to get a faster response, you can also choose Xubuntu! Since Xubuntu is quickly downloaded over the Internet (it takes only five minutes for me to download it), we can save some time and install it directly from the hard disk! Ubuntu 8.04 was released as early as April 24.
Note that although Xubuntu is used as an example, the method described here is generic. I have tested it. I just tested on my machine to enter the live status of the DVD version, and also to the alternate installation status.

Oh, download Xubuntu 8.04 and decompress it to a directory in a windows or linux partition (for convenience, assume that the root directory of a disk area is set to d disk, NTFS format, FAT32 format)
Next, I will use windows hard drive installation as an example to explain:

First: Download I provide to you grldr (grub for dos boot file, download see http://www.linuxidc.com/Linux/2008-03/11986.htm ).

Second, place the grldr obtained from downloading and decompression to the root directory of your C drive, and create a new file menu under drive C. lst (grldr boot list); use NotePad to Open menu. lst, which writes the following content to it:

Default 0
Timeout 40
Title Xubuntu install loader
Root (hd0, 4)
Kernel/casper/vmlinuz APPEND file =/preseed/xubuntu. seed boot = casper
Initrd/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash
Title Goback to Windows
Root (hd0, 0)
Chainloader + 1

Among them, root (hd0, 4) will change as you choose to place the Disk Area of the file after Xubuntu is decompressed. For example, if it is placed in C, root (hd0, 0 );

For example, it is root (hd0, 5) on disk E. It is also very important to recommend that you install it according to this example, which saves a lot of trouble.

Third: Modify the boot. ini boot. ini in windows and add the following sentence to boot. ini:
C: \ grldr = "ubuntu 8.04 installer"

The modification is as follows:

[Boot loader]
Timeout = 4
Default = multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (1) \ WINDOWS
[Operating systems]
Multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (1) \ WINDOWS = "Windows XP SP2"/noexecute = optin/fastdetect
C: \ grldr = "ubuntu 8.04 installer"

All right, after all this is done, restart the LiveCD environment of Xubuntu, and the rest of the installation will be very simple. I will not mention it here!

In addition, I would like to explain another simple and convenient method. Do not decompress the iso file, but just extract the vmlinuz and initrd.gz files. Then put it and the iso image file together in the root directory of a disk. Take disk D as an example:

Write the following content in menu. lst:

Title install-xubuntu8.04
Root (hd0, 4)
Kernel/vmlinuz boot = casper iso-scan/filename =/xubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso quiet splash ro
Initrd/initrd.gz

Replace the red content with the name of your image. Otherwise, the image cannot be found. This method has been installed and tested by me. It also supports reading iso files from NTFS to install ubuntu series liveCD and non-liveCD, which naturally include (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and other Ubuntu derivative versions)
