Title: XreaL: the most advanced open-source game engine. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.
The XreaL Project is a non-commercial multiplayer shooting game based on the Quake 3 Arena modified engine. It aims to compete with today's commercial games in rendering technology, developers claim that it is currently the most advanced open-source game engine.
According to Phoronix: The XreaL engine has changed a lot Based on Quake 3 Arena. It is based on the only Renderer using the OpenGL coloring language (GLSL) in the Quake engine. Currently, it supports the OpenGL 2.0 ES specification, however, developers have targeted the new OpenGL 3.0/3.1 specifications to take advantage of the new features on them. XreaL provides an open-source solution because commercial games with OpenGL 3.0/3.1 are not yet supported on the Linux platform. XreaL also adds a 64-bit HDR rendering pipeline to the engine. The XreaL Renderer has many advanced technologies implemented in Doom 3, such as optical interaction systems and shadow pasters. The traditional Quake engine has high CPU requirements, while the XreaL engine handed over a lot of work originally computed by the CPU to the GPU.
In addition to providing powerful graphics capabilities, XreaL can load game content from Quake 3, Doom 3, Unreal Tournament 2004, or even Unreal Tournament 3. The developer said that the XreaL engine is as powerful as the Doom 3 or Call of Duty 4 engine and is completely written using free software. The XreaL project has created plug-ins for Maya to expand their game development capabilities.
