Former MySQL staff reorganization in April was really good news for open-source enthusiasts. Although it is a very small group, SkySQL has now focused on bringing MariaDB to a wider market.
SkySQL, based in Helsinki, is fortunate enough to get the job done with a generous amount of money, led by Intel Capital for the $ 20 million Series B round of investment including California Technology Ventures, Finnish Industry Investment, Open Ocean Capital and Spintop Private Partners.
On Tuesday, CEO Patrik Sallner noted that big Linux distributions such as OpenSUSE, Red Hat and Fedora have embraced MariaDB and, of course, big names such as Google and Wikipedia, but SkySQL is eager to push the database into the enterprise.
"We want to dramatically increase the penetration and adoption of MariaDB in different environments," said Sallner. "There is relatively little knowledge about MariaDB, and MariaDB has been in the open source community, but we believe there is still a lot going on in the corporate world Business opportunities. "
As early as July this trend was already clear, with MairaDB introducing Fusion-io's "atomic write" feature, but Sallner said there will be more features to support this. GIS support and master-slave replication improvements in MariaDB 10.0.
Because of these enhancements, Sallner said MariaDB will have no technical difference over MySQL, and SkySQL will use this funding to make MariaDB easier to use.
"Communities have adopted a lot, but traditional businesses need better tools, graphical interfaces and management consoles," he said. "We are investing in traditional enterprise products and services and they may have more IT systems The administrator runs the database. "
Interestingly, Sallner also believes that the growth of open data activities is also a MariaDB opportunity, mainly because it is compatible with a large number of storage engines.
