Newbie, the first time debian is installed, the version is 4.0, and I don't know whether it is stable or unstable. I just installed it in a confused way, recording the installation process from yesterday to now.

Two Computers are installed in total, one DELL P4 desktop (20 GB debian) and one ibm T41 (10 Gb debian. It is said that debian has a variety of network and hard disk installation methods. I am too lazy to study it. It is enough for me to use the optical disk version. Debian4.0 has three DVDs, the first is the system disk, and the third is the software disk. That is to say, you can only install the first one. After the system is installed, you can configure the network and install the software through the apt-get method. (I didn't know at the beginning. I thought I wanted to put different CDs three times in the same way as red hat 9.0. So yesterday I installed the system with only one disc .)

Installation Process
1. Drive-Cd-Restart
Select the language and install it as prompted. The debian installation process is more concise than winxp. Notes:

(1) failed to automatically configure the network. In this case, choose not to configure the network. You can configure the network after the system is installed.
(2) I am too lazy to partition. The two computers have 768 MB of memory. For the selected automatic partition, the P4 swap partition is automatically 402 MB, but the T41 swap partition is automatically MB. Dizzy. I don't know how the algorithm is written. Please try to manually split it if you are more diligent!
(3) Be careful when entering the user password. Generally, the password is wrong twice, but the user name will not work. I wrote jackie as jacike by mistake. As a result, I couldn't log on to the client. I spent a lot of time finding the reason!

2. System Configuration
Debian installation has the advantage that all hardware can be driven without any additional driver. When I installed winxp on T41, I had 6 hardware to download the driver. DELL P4 also had 3 hardware to use the driver.
(1) network IP: Application-System Tools-Network Tools, select eth0, click Configure, fill in IP, mask, gateway. This is only an IP address. You only need to enter the IP address that can be connected to the LAN, not the internet, or DNS.
(2) network DNS: no specific graphic interface is provided for DNS. You need to log on to/etc/resolv. conf as the root user and add a servername 192.168.1 .*. If there are two DNS servers, add them with a new line feed.
(3) Note: Application-System Tools-Network Tools, DELL's P4 server can click Configuration to fill in the IP address, but T41 cannot, I thought there was no driver for the NIC. You can only access the Internet after manually adding/etc/network/interfaces.

3. Install software
(1) network installation: log on to/etc/apt/sources as the root user. list to add the program source, and then run apt-get update to update the source and then apt-get install emacs to install it.

This is the sources after the system is installed. list automatically blocks the source. My understanding is that the network source is blocked due to the installation of the CD. You can remove the # number at the beginning of lines 2nd and 4 to use it normally.

The source is ustc, and the speed is acceptable.

(2) CD installation: desktop-system management-the new software package manager, enter the root password to enter, edit-add CD-ROM, according to the prompts successively put 3 CD, mount the software on the CD to the system. After mounting the three discs, click search, find the software to be installed, right-click the software to install it, and click the application to install it, during different software installation processes, you may be prompted to put the first few discs into the system. You can select all the software to be installed at one time and then click the application, which will be faster.
