How to install the Linux System Setup Nmap tool

This article is the third of a series of application guides on how to use Nmap security tools in an enterprise environment.

Linux is the most common platform for running NMAP tools software. In fact, most Linux distributions contain nmap, although nmap may not be installed by default. Even if your system already has a nmap software, you should also consider upgrading to the latest version, the download URL is: http://www.insecure.org/nmap/download.html (note: Not all Nmap distributions have a special Nmap program signing key. This key can be obtained from this website: http://www.insecure.org/nmap/data/nmap_gpgkeys.txt)

Linux users can choose to install the source code, or choose a binary package that is provided by the reseller for the RPM. Source code installation is more flexible, you can determine how to establish the NMAP program, and according to your system optimization. Binary packages are faster and more convenient to install, typically in accordance with the standard directory paths and settings provided by the reseller. These packages are also easier to manage when it comes to the problem of upgrading software on the system. The Nmap package contains only command-line executable commands and data files, and Nmap front-end packets include an optional X-window graphical user interface named "NMAPFE".

Compiling and installing Nmap from source code is one of the most powerful ways to install this software, ensuring that you have the latest version, and that Nmap can adapt to the library and directory structure of your specific system. This built system is designed to be automatically detected as much as possible, but there are dozens of command-line parameters and environment variables that can affect how nmap is built. I recommend that you run the "./configure" command to see the Help file.

Installing Nmap via RPM is also easy. However, if you do have a problem, for example, if your library version differs greatly from the original version of the library, you can build and install your own binary rpm from the original RPM.

To run and test nmap, enter: Nmap-a-t4 scanme.insecure.org

This command scans the host scanme.insecure.org at the shell prompt. The A and T4 options start the operating system and version detection and set the time template to "active". There are more than 100 command-line options, some of which we'll cover in a future guide.

If you are having trouble running the NMAP program, scroll the output screen and view the first error message. Then, check the http://seclists.org/#nmap-dev site for the Nmap-dev list archive file that contains this issue. The http://www.insecure.org/nmap/docs.html website also has many technical support files for Nmap, so subscribing to the nmap-hacker mailing list is worthwhile.

Because Nmap is a command-line application, it is easy to run from a scripting program and does not require many different options to be able to scan accurately. However, for administrators who do not adapt to the command prompt, there are also graphical user interfaces for Linux. NMAPFE are the most commonly used. It offers a number of options, all of which can be used to create an appropriate NMAP command. During the build, the Nmap command line is displayed at the bottom of the window.
